Are there only 3 new idents?? I've only seen Drums, Imagination & Equalizer. Surely they got more than 3 made? They will get old quite quick otherwise!!
Last night I only saw two new 5 idents: the one with the drummer and the one with the graphic equalizer. Aren't they going to have more than that?
There is also this 'Imagination' ident which you can see on various sites, but yeah, it's a bit of a letdown, just 3 idents, and they seem to be using the equalizer ident the most.
The logo yes is simple, and basic, but I don't understand people's slating of it. Much the same as many other broadcasters they've created a new look comprising of a font within a shape. The logo is only seen as different to the other channels as it's only one character, and with it also being a numeral the only comparison we have to it in the uk is Channel 4, and I think it was obvious that nothing was ever going to be created on the scale of that logo. There may be an issue with the basic font chosen, or that it's not a newly created design, but at least it doesn't have the word 'Channel' within the onscreen logo.
The DOG could be toned down as others have said, I think I would prefer it to be tried elsewhere on screen, with such a simple round logo, it would look as well placed on the bottom of the screen. It's strange how in the UK, the only channels that seem to use bottom of the screen logos are the kids channels, possibly due to them using an American package. Even the majority of UK variants of US brand over here use a top left logo. Anyway, I digress.
The idents work well, simple and use the big screen as the theme, though as people have said there only seem to be 3, out of these imagination is my favourite as it contains the most action within the ident.
Could it be that only 3 were fully finished for launch and that more will be added with the next few weeks?
I wonder if they will eventually do as they have with the past two logos and end up making programme specific Idents.
The idea of the screen used on the idents reminds me a little of the 1999 5 Idents with the different backgrounds used, and in my opinion they worked well with the channels faces at the time, and a lot better than the ITV stars Idents of 2003.
The package for the rest of the press to me is evolved from the previous look with new font, especially the ECP. The trailer end boards work very well with the way that the text enters, and the 5 logo swipe revealing the logo alone at the end. The one thing that I would like to see is if they could remove the black frame between trailers to show the logo seemlessly ending one trailer and revealing the next.
As for the news, the new set works well for both main news and OK!TV.
I'm not too keen on the navy blue and red logo used for 5News, I think the standard red with White five logo, or blur featured earlier here looks a lot better. I also don't like the way that the 'news' is placed onto the 5, again it looked better on the blue logo on here previously. As I've posted before I'd like to see more of a change to the
styles of bulletins that I presume they will refer and play with over the coming months.
As for OK!TV. the guardian article slates the programme based on its editorial content. I may have read into it wrongly, but I expected what I saw last night a refreshed Live from studio five. It's still made by sky news, and worked well to link in with the OK! brand to try with cross promotion. I expect the only immediate change to be more less entertainment features such as jesson button's piece on valentines day (as random as it was).
All in all, not bad. It does look as though it's a change to show Richard Desmond's take on the channel, but it's what most new management would do with any company. Thank god they hired an outside agency to make good work of what could have been word art in a PowerPoint presentation.

I think the problem is less the actual re-brand, but the trashy tabloid re-positioning of the channel's attitude and programming.

I don't like it as the logo seems so uninspired that it does have a detrimental effect on the remainder of the rebrand which is reasonable as long as you don't look at it too long. Also, it does bring back the dark days of the 90's for the channel with the new oldness feel which probably means it'll be up for sale in six years time or less once more. I'm confident that it's probably a interim logo until something better is whipped up, the fact it retains the old five orange/red tone and all the other ancillary logos (Five FWD, Five Play, etc.) just have it shoehorned in help with that assessment.
Maybe Family Affairs will come back from the dead, Crossroads style? Someone here I know would enjoy that a lot.
