While I agree that some beautifully directed and memorable form-up sequences have been lost, I'm surprised nobody's mentioned something much more obvious.

This is a step back towards traditional presentation... albeit not traditional BBC1 presentation.

A quick, unmistakable musical sting to grab your attention as the symbol forms... then the announcer starts speaking. Pres, just like it should be. Never again will the announcer on BBC1 speak over images which don't explicitly identify the channel or promote a programme! And never again will there be tight junctions where the ident is cut off before the logo forms up!

Judged by the result - and not how some individual idents have been recut - this is a good move.

Well yes. Before, back in the olden days when BBC One had a globe, they could cut instantly into the ident and start talking.

If they were promoting a show on later or on another channel they would use a holding slide.
With the balloons, they technically had a 'grab', sometimes they had a little tune before the BBC ONE logo appered and sometimes they just cut to the logo appering.

When they just cut to the logo form up the music usually had a sharp note or something of the like.
Example:

It grabbed your attention.

As did ones with the little bit of music at the start.

PS. I might be wrong about the holding slides thing.

I think that many of us mentioned the sting being better at the start than at the end pretty much from the day they debuted. I certainly did.

The problem with sometimes the programme starting before the ident fully forms is just down to them being useless at timing the links. Channel 4 has shown every single time that you can have a long form up, the announcer can finish before we see the '4' and the programme can start after the ident plays out.

BBC1 are just a bit crap about that and couldn't figure it out.

Welcome back, Kites - and a long version, too (if a new cut).

'Kites' is fantastic. The music is wonderful (or perhaps just reflects my taste in music!) - very reminiscent of the 'Helicopter' theme.

The re-cut 'Hippos' isn't too bad, I suppose (though it makes no sense at all without the 'story' of the form-up, and neither will, for example, 'Dog Display' or the crop circle one), but 'Bikes' seems more like a 'sombre' ident with its new music. I won't miss the long version of 'Forest' though.

Who thinks 'Surfer' will survive, given that its circle is so short?

I think it was more that they always tried to jam in far too many trails into the junction. Which would have been excuseable if it wasn't the same two trails over and over and over again.

Well that was much better, at first I was unsure about the new soundtrack but it's a real grower. Very quirky.

Surfer has survived and stangely enough no changes have been made apart from the BBC ONE logo being visible throughout

When I saw Hippos I was really worried about this as I didn't think it worked well, but Kites was much better! Smile

Nice to see Kites back but I don't like the music - the original version was far better IMO

There are only long versions of Hippos, Capes and Bikes.

Some of the new cuts work ok - Magic Forest isn't bad, and the new Helicopter is quite pacy, much less "Silent Witness" than before.

As for the rest of them... well, yes, much of the original meaning of the idents has gone. Dogs and Penguins have had about 90% of the fun removed.

I like the red added to the animation though - it's a nod to the channel's signature colour (otherwise completely absent in some idents), and I reckon it's something they should have been doing since the original batch launched.

I must say I am disappointed with the new cut idents. They are ok but have distorted the uniqueness of a story leading into the logo. I would say to the BBC bad move! The only good thing is the music on some of them. I think they should bring the uncut idents back! (with the new music?) All that money gone to wasted.
