I wonder if they will 'add a bit of studio' for the new 16:9 broadcasts next month ?

the 3 studios are all about 700 sqft (according to the installation company) Small but not tiny.

Which is about the the TSW news studio, ITV west and many others.

The set is the problem, the curve and rear projection waste space. A lightbox perspex, mirror and projection (from the short end of the studio not the long) would have been a better fit.

The set looks like a bodge job anyway - you can often see the cables through the panelling.

A fine example of how tiny that studio is. A broom cupboard would be better.

My word - it IS a broom cupboard isn't it!!??
Lovely to see Glen Thompsett on the late Meridian East news last night rounding off with a little promotion for the Bond movie which followed the bulletin - obviously going back to his 'continuity' roots.

I hope they only hire short presenters. If you were 6'6" and stood up on the rostrum you'd probably hit your head on a lamp...

700 sqft is quite small for a studio - though not a broom cupboard. Look East in Norwich had about 600sqft in their main studio in Norwich ISTR before they moved to the Forum - and at least they are studios rather than a bit of the newsroom (like BBC London and BBC South East Today)

On the other hand, the lighting grid looks to be VERY low, and the style of set (projector based) isn't brilliant for small spaces (though with a folded mirror and a wide-throw lens you can reduce the space needed quite considerably - though wide-throw lenses are more hot-spotty ISTR)

Which may be why Meridian didn't have rear projectors when they first moved to Whiteley and had those awful bits of cardboard behind the presenters instead.

noggin has a point about that lighting rig; given that it is a standard office shell hight.

Suprised so many photobeard type florescents and no softspots or smaller fittings to give the talent some visual interest.

Though when you see the result on camera it explains a lot... Meridian in Southampton, Newbury and New Hythe had some pretty high production values (good lighting, good quality camera control, good sound etc.) - so it was even sadder when they nose-dived when they moved to Whiteley...

What a delight to see Glen Thompsett presenting the East edition of Meridian Tonight along with Sangeeta (although I did prefer him working with the lovely Charlotte Hawkins)
He just, how can I explain it, looks very comfortable and easy to watch.
Sadly don't see much of him on the main show these days - wonder why?
Come on - lets see more of him. My Mum goes all weak at the knees!!

It's not very big that is it. I take it Meridian never have musical guests performing or any high shots of the studio

They have a camera up on the celling but appart from that you'd be lucky for any high shots. That image actually gives the impression that the studio is bigger than it is.

As for music acts performing, I don't think they have ever done that on Meridian Tonight. They do have a balcony should they ever need to fit more than two guests in the studio Laughing

Meridian SE - Tonight's Sport news.. What a bodge job. I mean, fair enough, Andy Steggal is a Sports Reporter but when he's also reading the news it looks awkward.

Pointless moan.
