Well I thoroughly enjoyed that closing ceremony as I did the Olympics as a whole, although when the Chinese did their bit I was beginning to wonder whether or not I was watching a new BBC One Ident... so much red!

Ah well, finished again, roll on Beijing 2008!

I am not optimistic for a London bid - not just winning, but hosting.

We make a mess of just about everything we try to do in London.

The Manchester Commonwealth Games were superb. I went to them and everything ran like clockwork. But the same thing couldn't happen in the capital.

to a certain extent I agree with you. Although not a major event, I went to see Madonna at Earls Court (and bloody fantastic she was too!) and it was sheer pandemonium at the end when the police realised that 30,000 fans rushing to the tube trains was a bit dangerous. amid mayhem and chaos we were told to stay in the earls Court courtyard for a while while several fans were asked to leave periodically. before that a signal failure on the underground meant it took me an extra hour to get from paddington to earls Court. just think what could happen if we had the Olympics. You can guarantee that the tube workers will go on strike aswell as BA staff and the trains! good old England!

I really hope we get the games though, but arn't we trailing Paris? I actually think we would put on an excellent games provided that the other systems such as hotels, transport etc. co-operated. Bring on 2012!

I agree with the olympic coverage. The coverage and presentation were high-class, but there were a few problems in my opinion:

- Not enough coverage on mainstream BBC 1 and 2 of events such as water polo
- Freeview coverage was okay, but they shoved live events onto the bottom two screens on DSat so freeview just got news coverage when live coverage of events could be available
- Scheduling - who cares about what happens to EastEnders? EDIT: Though Olympics Interactive automatically switched to either BBC 1 or 2's Olympic Coverage...which is a +

And the awkward chemistry between Balding and Doyle - euch.

Scheduling was slightly annoying with the coverage moving between BBC1 and BBC2 constantly. They should have done something radical like have the coverage on BBC1 or BBC2 constantly, one channel becoming *the* Olympics channel and showing nothing else, with normal programming normally found on one channel making unusual appearances on the other

Well overall I thought the BBC's coverage of the Olympics was to a very high standard. The thing that set the BBC's coverage apart from the rest was being able to view the other events via the red button so the viewer could view the event they most enjoyed instead of sticking with the one BBC One or Two had on.

some tv channels had a service similar to the BBC's. I believe German Television on satellite used four tv stations, Eins Muxx, ZDF Dokukanal, ZDF Theaterkanal, Eins Festival (tv coverage is shared between two national broadcasters) to broadcast olympics non-stop, along with the main channels, ARD Das Erste and ZDF.

the greek television ERT had around 6 channels dedicated to the Olympics...and Supersport South Africa had 8 channels.

Of course this is all own DIgital Satellite and maybe Cable

They should take a leaf out of RTÉ's book, as they usually put of all the Olympics on RTÉ2 (Or Network 2 or whatever you may call it), but at least then it's non-stop all day with few if any interruptions, from what I have seen the majority of RTÉ1 daytime is full of kids shows inherited from N2 for the duration of the games.

Though from what I have seen this isn't the first time they have done this, The TV Room has some captures from the Barcelona Games in 1992.

Though it has been pointed out that other countries have the games on more than two TV channels, remember the 1988 when they were on BBC1, BBC2, ITV and Channel 4? The last time it was done and will probably not be the same again, as the BBC have got a deal which will probably last a lifetime.

Well, it did most of the time, anyway. On some occasions, the menu on Freeview linked to the wrong channel as someone hadn't remembered to flick the switch when the coverage moved.

Even during the Closing Ceremony, the Menu listed BBC TWO and the Non-Commentary feed, meaning if you were listening to the Non-Commentary feed, you couldn't switch back to the normal coverage on BBC ONE without first exiting the Interactive Services.

Apart from that, the coverage has been excellent and the extra 'channels' on both TV and bbc.co.uk have been a godsend.

Actually I'm not sure the Olympics were on BBC2 in 88, I seem to rmember all of the BBC's coverage was on BBC1 - leading them to call BBC1 "The Olympic Channel" which got right up ITV/C4's nose so that one or both of them started to call themselves "The Athletics Channel" - they shared UK Domestic athletics at the time and also took a joint approach to International Athletics.

Those were the days!

The other thing I remember about the 1988 games was Des Lynam had a book out - lots of facts and figures about the Olympics. He obviously didn't write it himself, but anyway. When he was doing the talk shows he said that if you were watching the games on the BBC this would be an ideal aide, and if you were watching them on the other side it was essential.

Oh how we laughed.

On the whole excellent coverage from the BBC - outstanding - and obviously boosted by the success of Team GB.

A few gripes:

I wish the BBC would ditch EastEnders / Holby etc completely for the two weeks (and for events such as Euro 2004). You don't please viewers of the Olympics by switching channels constantly - and you don't please fans of EE by moving it about the schedule. Nothing has happened in EE over the last couple of weeks, and they could have had a really good cliff-hanger with the Dot (she's not leaving, so won't be dying!) cancer storyline.

Secondly, Olympic Grandstand should have been on both BBC1 and 2 at crucial times - especially in the second week when Athletics dominates the coverage.

And my final gripe - A Life of Grime. After the Closing Ceremony of one of TV's most inspirations events finished early, you'd think the BBC could have found something more appropriate to screen - either the Olympic Review shown earlier on BBC2 or a repeat of A Question of Sport or something. Anyhow, suppose we should be greatful it wasn't Only Fools and Horses.

Moving on to the News Channels - I thought the news organisations had an agreement that they could use footage within 24 hrs of the event. Sky News and the ITV News Channel accompanied most of their stories with stills. Also, from the Felicity Barr diary it's quite obvious the spirit of the Olympics doesn't expand to those not officially linked with the event.
