Piers Morgan to leave GMB

I think that tomorrow could just be Susanna and Ranvir presenting as GMB during COVID has generally been using the newsreaders as short-notice cover instead of drafting an extra person into TVC.

This is now the sink or swim point for GMB, similar to what happened when Adrian and Christine abruptly left Daybreak earlier than planned - either GMB will fall back into GMTV fluff mode like Daybreak did repeatedly or ITV Breakfast/Studios will learn from its past mistakes, get its s**t together, apologise on air for Piers' comments, put a strong temporary anchor(s) in with Susanna and try to move forward.

Daybreak didn’t really set the agenda. Not really sure how you can say she is living in an alternate reality for holding that opinion.

Daybreak was a flop, but it's merely a footnote in the history of breakfast TV now so it's irrelevant.

It is a nonsense to say that 'no-one watched breakfast TV before Piers Morgan'. Audience figures for that time of day have always been low and it is true that during his time GMB had it's highest audience.... but they've not gone up by that much. I can't find the figures but I suspect that GMTV at it's peak wasn't that much different, and then there's the Big Breakfast. Also for all Piers' boasting GMB still has a more popular rival.

I don't know who she is but I think she's been take in by Piers' over enthusiastic and slightly misleading ratings tweets

To be fair to India, I get the impression she isnt saying ‘TV sets weren’t on at breakfast time before Morgan’, she’s saying no one really payed attention and it didn’t really make an impact. I would also suggest she’s not going as far back as The Big Breakfast in that assessment either.

No sure I agree it’s right, but it’s only fair to correctly interpret her point.

I agree with much of what your saying, but that’s not what she said. She’s not saying nobody watched, as in audience figures were low, she’s saying it was background filler... i.e. watched but not engaging. That’s a different thing all together. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to say GMB is talked about TV (regardless of it you like it or not) and it’s done a good job in getting its stories picked up by other media throughout the day.

Though if people are talking about something for the wrong reasons, that's not a good thing either.

I'm putting Iain Dale up their as a contender to replace Piers. Find him quite likeable and jovial.

There are some rather ridiculous suggestions in this thread but as someone who doesn’t mind Iain Dale despite his political leanings, I have to say ITV breakfast material, he ain’t!

So with a lot of unlikely suggestions, I would predict;

It’s not going to be anything other than the traditional male/female split.

It’s not going to be a reporter that’s unknown outside of ITV News.

The commitment of recording a few episodes of an ITV daytime gameshow throughout the year, probably isn’t going to stop anyone getting the job.

It probably won’t be Ben Shephard.

It’ll probably be one of Richard Madeley, Richard Bacon, Adil Ray or Eamon Holmes, who gets the gig long term.

And I may be wrong on some or all of those points.

That’s clearly the point she was making. Besides the news, weather, Sport, the rest of the hour on most breakfast shows is just filler to have in the background. Not that literally nobody was watching.

Regarding Piers storming off this morning, that must have clearly have been staged. I’ve noticed it took place at 6:38, so he hardly had time to ‘have enough of this’. Unless there had been arguments off screen before the show started, it seemed a bit fake to storm off so early in the programme.

The only other person to have walked out of the GMB studio in a huff.

I think you're underestimating Piers' incredibly thin skin.
