Remember this is a CNN US simulcast. The commercial breaks on CNN US are longer than CNN International normally are.
CNN US viewers see actual adverts in the breaks, like UK viewers of Sky News do. CNN International is filling the length of these breaks with the filler you mentioned. When it goes back to CNN International proper, the breaks within International's own produced programmes will be a lot shorter than these we are seeing.
I guess casual viewers, including Dara, don't know this.
I didn't see everyone's coverage last night, but here's how I'd rate the networks I watched:
1) MSNBC
The full package: studio, music, graphics all spot-on, great presenters and a friendly feel - and quick with their calls.
2) CBS
By far the most-improved network compared with previous elections. Looked great with a fun, relaxed feel. Good analysis although slower to make calls.
3) NBC
Looked great but had quite a dry and serious feel to it. Didn't do any Rockefeller Plaza-based AR like MSNBC did, and like they've done in the past.
4) ABC
Felt like it had lost all the excitement of past elections without Times Square. Looked quite drab and essentially the same as Super Tuesday. A shame, as they've been my favourite in the past.
So it appears based on what I'm reading and the timings of the results, we may see this all over later tomorrow morning or in the afternoon. Wonder how broadcasters will deal with this if we know in the middle of the day where normal programming is on?
In the UK coverage, BBC News ran US Election 2020 branded coverage up until 1800 GMT and then we got Ros in London, then Katty and Christian. Now its 0000GMT and Kasia Maderia is presenting a generic branded BBC News. I think this is poor from BBC as the election is still going on, we don't officially know a winner.
Whereas Sky on the other hand is still in full election mode, as it should be, with occasional stints back in Sky Centre with a bit of other news and the Papers. The 0000GMT open has all the same America Decides branding and theme just like it has continued with when coverage began 14 hours ago.
Who knows what happened to ITV's coverage, after GMB ended at 0900GMT this morning, I saw Lorraine pop up and I guess the usual daytime schedule continued.
Yes, no extended bulletins during the day. I assume the lunchtime bulletin was anchored from London.
Are the US networks still continuing with open-ended coverage until they get a result?
CNN and the other news channels are. I've not checked, but based on notifications I've gotten from CBS News and NBC News, I'm guessing they're going on air with regular updates.

NBC is showing election coverage, the other main networks are back with entertainment programming.

Sky are still in election mode while the BBC and ITV appear to have given up on full scale coverage
