Having just seen one on BBC 1, maybe the fade out for the text shouldn't be there for airings on 1 & 4. I realise that would involve making two sets of trails though (then again, they made an old style and new style trail for last chance lawyer)

Yes but it's one thing making 2 versions of a few trails that will straddle a rebrand, but another doing it for every trail forever

So that switch between Light Serif to Medium Sans is a stroke of genius. Emphasise the programme name, whilst adding a quirky quality which is fitting of BBC Two.

I am going to guess that BBC Reith has been turned into a Variable Font for internal use, to animate the transitions in weight and serif. If not, then its still a neat and seamless transition which is great.

The 2 will be missed but this looks fantastic. I doubt they'll get 25+ years out of it but it's the sort of thing which can comfortably adapt with time. Already looking forward to the wrapping paper version.

Well, I think the new look is utterly fantastic - on the off chance that anyone involved in creating it happens to be reading this, hats off, caps doffed, the lot - you've outdone yourselves. Everything looks great - and how nice to finally see some consistency in the endboards - endboards that actually look good!

And as much as I loved the old 2s, I do think that placing that big teal box in the corner ruined them somewhat, and combined with the (awful) surrounding pres package, it made the channel look very tatty, so I think a completely new direction was needed. Dare I say that in time, this new look will become as iconic as the big 2s?

You're right about BBC One's idents looking inferior to these. However, as One re-branded less than 2 years ago, I think we are some way off Oneness getting replaced, particularly as more idents keep on getting added to the collection. I can see BBC One sticking with their idents for at least another 3 years, if not longer.

Apart from the fact that Oneness was announced to last just a year.

Having said that, I reckon ITV will relaunch sooner. Same logo, new concept of ident. With the revamps of BBC 2 and Channel 4, combined with a large change in personnel since the last relaunch, I doubt they'll resist it for much longer.

There's the issue that the likes of BBC Two and ITV3 have more room to be experimental, as they're not the main channels. BBC Two's 6am launch ident was completely out there, very much in the spirit of the quirkier 2s from the 90s. It's perfect for this channel because BBC Two should be more challenging and you can imagine what ident would be best with what programme. BBC One has a much broader audience.

I can see Oneness lasting for a while simply because they've come along at a politically sensitive time - this is not a good time to be splashing cash on new idents, and there is a solid principle in trying to bring everyone together at such a polarised time.

I do wonder though, in the long-term, whether we're heading for a time when live action idents go out of fashion. It feels like that era was down to trying to be relatable to the audience, thus featuring an idealised version of people's lives. Now, brands seem to be going for aspirational and that's the opposite of featuring everyman in your ident.

In terms of the new BBC Two ident though - it's the right set of idents, at the right place, at the right time. The BBC2 idents they've replaced are iconic, but they're of a very different time and channel. These have the spirit of the previous ones but have brought them right up to date.

These are officially the worst idents I have ever seen. Worse than Oneness, Circles, Window on the World...

I'm going to be a little more forgiving and ask why you think they're the worst idents you've ever seen... More specifically, how you feel they're worse than a bunch of people standing still for a few seconds?

This has got to be a joke, right? Massive L.

It’s better than all of those ident sets you listed

Hopefully the design of this page will be updated before too long! https://www.bbc.co.uk/bbctwo

If anything needed changing, it was the logo. Looks plain and cheap in comparison to the new fonts and graphics.

Northern Ireland used a different ident to that of Network and Wales in the 12.15 junction, so good to see they're still keeping that little bit of rebelliousness alive. Wink Not sure what Scotland used as I'd missed setting the recording 15 minutes earlier for their different schedule!

You could argue it echoes Lambie Nairn's pitch in 1997, where the idents and presentation have the personality.
