Poaching Huw Eggwards is the only thing left to try really.

I would prefer him scrambled, to be honest........

I'm not against a more conversational style of newscasting, especially with the BBC playing it all deadly straight . . .

It's not a conversation, it's supposed to be a journalist either informing people of the news, or linking items where other people do it.

BBC, ITV, ITN and Sky are also guilty of pointlessly 'interviewing' their own correspondents, where they simply repeat the information they have just imparted in their recorded piece. That also smacks of this 'needless conversational style'.

Tell the news, don't make a drama out if it.

Not sure moving to one of those sort of channels would be the best career move for him. Wink

Just a slight reality check: since the Bradby revamp, News at Ten has grown its audience from an average of about 1.5m to an average of about 2m, and has also increased its average share. I've no doubt that ITV would prefer that it performed much better - but it's hard to conclude that Bradby and the conversational style have been an unmitigated disaster or that going back to the preceding style would help matters.

Would be interesting to see if there has been any significant change in the three months or so he was off?

Although the consequences to Mark and Julie of Tom taking over News at Ten meant he didn't get off too the best start I do think on the whole it was the right move, even if these mis-steps happen, and the time he had off probably proved it more than the time he's on air. His input was definately missed during some of the key Brexit news stories.

(And also be careful what you wish for as there is every chance if Bradby was to step aside that Peston would be next in line to take the seat!)

I doubt that in 2018 that BBC One would be showing post watershed dramas starting at 9.45pm.

The change would not have been as early as 2000 had ITV not surrendered the time slot. But I expect the BBC would have converged onto 10pm ultimately regardless.

It's not just dramas, things like The Apprentice would be on far too late or edited to suit 8pm plus 9.45pm is an awkward junction for any show. There's a reason shows usually are on the hour or half hour unless it's a Saturday.

It’s amazing that the Beeb didn’t move the main news to 10pm until this century !

With online viewing, and PVRs used with gay abandon, I wonder how much longer the watershed will survive ?

I agree. Most of my viewing is recorded, the only issue with 'post-watershed' programmes is that they require me to enter a PIN on Sky+.

News programmes are possibly the only thing I watch 'live', and even now on Freeview+ you're encouraged to "watch from the start".

What the software ITV News uses to show the camera positions and directions here at 2:30 in is it bespoke?

It is interesting to see what would have happened on BBC One, if ITV News at Ten was never moved.

Like is being said, the idea of ITV having a clear run with major dramas at 9pm is unheard of in today's world, with that slot regularly seeing the BBC and ITV going head to head with their biggest stuff. In many cases the rest of prime time is just soaps and light filler leading up to that slot.

But would the BBC have really moved their news head to head with News at Ten? ITV of course never moved head to head directly but just shuffled there and back with varying degrees of enthusiasm until where we are at now.

I always found it odd that BBC One for donkeys' years had a measly 2-hour gap for entertainment etc, between two lots of 30-60 minutes' worth of news, in weekday primetime (i.e. from the 7pm ending of the main regional news, until what we might call "The Nine"). Always seemed too close together, to me.

Depending on the scheduling of the ITV regional news in your particular region back in those days, there was either 3 or 3.5 hours of prime-time entertainment between news on ITV (i.e. 6:30pm/7pm - 10pm).
