Why can't Sky/ITV/BBC team up and build a semi-permanent structure on the green, it wouldn't be anymore obstructionist than what is already there now...

I doubt any permanent structure would be allowed.

A small building split into three would look miles better than all of the tents, gazebos and platforms there at the moment though.

Yes but a tent/gazebo can be put up in five minutes and taken down just as quick (or instantly if the wind blows hard enough and the tent's not secure Smile). A building will take best part of a month to get the idea going before anybody picks up a spade.

It does seem a bit crazy that a more permanent solution has not yet been sought. The broadcasters should undoubtedly come together and share the cost of a small building on the Green that is both sympathetic to the local architecture and provides a full wall of windows with small studios for both domestic and international broadcasters. The current set-up isn't working.

Provided they got planning permission plus the permission of whichever authority actually owns the land - which doesn't seem likely.

It could be worse, presenting outdoor from Westminster in July is nothing compared to December/January

Abingdon (or College) Green is in a conservation area and the shadow of a World Heritage Site - which makes it a bit tricky to get planning permission. I think I once saw permission for a comms cabinet being denied, so I don't think a camera platform has much hope.

On the subject of poor weather conditions, here's Kay Burley being given some coffee by a sympathetic policeman (while interviewing Ed Balls) in 2010:

Alternatively, Kay Burley could just pitch a tent and call squatters rights, à la parliament square?

I wonder if something like Pebble Beach that's setup at the White House would work? The area is heavily landscaped and there's a permanent canopy that's green that's divided up into individual stalls for different broadcasters. It's setup as pretty much a plug and play operation where they just need to plug in the camera and turn off the lights. When not in use the permanent fixtures such as the lights are covered in green weatherproof fabric so it would "blend in" with the surroundings.
The pictures on the Internet for "Pebble Beach" are several years old but it was recently redone.

Edit : Here's a link to the Pebble Beach's Foursquare. You'll see how it's set up and divided. Because most of the stuff is green you would have to be looking for it to notice it from the street. I believe a few organizations have set up a weatherproof PTZ HD camera so they can show live pictures of the White House with out anyone being there.

Can Adam and Sarah just sit at the desk together? It looks awkward standing in that cramped space.

I'm not sure there's any need for permanent buildings on College Green, all of the main broadcasters have nice weatherproof studios a stone's throw away in 4 Millbank.

(Or does it work out cheaper to use an OB facility and crew that is rostered than to call people in to staff the gallery in Millbank?)

Interesting that Sky done an interview with Angela Eagle inside of BBC's NBH Newsroom. Unless it was a pooled interview? I know it's common for Sky's cameras to be waiting in the plaza of NBH, but I've never seen this before.
