Also quite important for your print logo to look acceptable in black and white for when things get photocopied or faxed. Or so you can put a single colour version over an image.

The big pile of carpet really adds something to the look, I feel.

linking in with another thread, I suspect that Thronecast and Last Week Tonight being late deliveries caused some problems in playout last night.
After part 1 of Last Week Tonight, we were treated to over a minute of black and silence, then this breakdown slide plus some 2003 EPG music - before the ad break started for real.

(with apologies for terrible photo)

Also, would they normally use the "a Sky Original programme" before an HBO import?

I presumed it was to make it look as though it had crashed into the ground, like in the idents

Not the first time they've had issues with Last Week Tonight. It's a strange one, because we see it the day after HBO broadcast, so didn't someone spot whatever the issue was when checking (more so as Sky Atlantic have a break to insert, whereas HBO don't) so there was enough time yesterday to correct it.

Unless the issue was at play out with Sky, and not any problems with it coming off the fibres/satellite from New York.

I thought it must be that as well, but it looks awful. Would look much better if the 1 was just standing on its own rather than looking someone dumped a pile of old carpet infront of it.

This is gonna sound really nitpicky, but:-

If the '1' is supposed to have fallen from above and landed there, shouldn't the carpet be pinned underneath not sitting around it?

If the '1' is supposed to have risen from below, shouldn't the hole be much bigger to accommodate the arm on the '1' which came 'up' first?

I'm thinking the '1' is supposed to have risen from below, which is why the carpet is supposedly torn in the area underneath the arm on the '1', which has then fallen back around the smaller base.

This could easily have been done much better.

I think in UK broadcasting, people probably think '1' and think either BBC One or Radio 1. Not sure evolving an whole brand around '1' is a such good idea for Sky and/or enough of a unique symbol.

They have previously used just a '1' symbol before for their pres and it seemed to work fine for them http://theident.gallery/sky1-2008.php
Don't see why they can't do it again, and now they still use the full Sky 1 logo as well, its just not the focus any more.

Yeah, I know they have used it before,

Like I say, BBC One could get away with using just 1 if they wanted, but '1' on it's own is not strong enough for Sky 1, but I'm not saying they cannot use it or they won't.

If I was running Sky1, I'd want the 'Sky' to be as much as part of the brand as the 1. The 'Sky', as much, if not more important here.

I'm not sure you're right. Sky are also using the standardised channel logo in promos, which is corporate. The '1' also uses their own font, so is unique in that respect.

It's certainly a bold move to concentrate on the '1' for the idents, as they'll need to develop more of them to enhance the idea of a character.

Fortunately, for Sky, they have deep pockets and this is an ident which can be used across their whole group.
