Are there even 52 events. Events last a week, they have 6 weeks off at the end of the year, 8 weeks doing the grand slam (with usually nothing significant the week before/after), then weeks off for the fed cup. The 30 events they currently show are probably the only 30 worth showing.

There are, but some of the events runs concurrently with another.

Therefore some of the tournaments will be relegated to Red Button / Online.

The rest of the WTA (and ATP) calendar for this year, with TV information, can be seen at https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1WRxU9vW0uJk8dc1oPlfW3E0aKFhZ-goYoWwGKsA-HnE/edit?usp=sharing

In weeks where there aren't any of the Grand Slams, four Mandatory and five Premier 5 events, there are usually two events running side by side, either a Premier and an International or two Internationals. Also apart from the finals at the end of the year, there is usually an International event running in Fed Cup weeks.

At the moment BT pick up the International events on an ad hoc basis, and usually only the final stages. This may be because at present the WTA doesn't produce a world feed for International events. For example, earlier this year Hobart was only made available from the semi finals onwards, and BT took locally produced coverage of the Auckland International (with Sky NZ graphics). When Birmingham was an International event (it's now a Premier), Eurosport were the host broadcaster and therefore produced the graphics. I wonder if the WTA are offering more tournaments on their world feed from next year.

This week BT are showing the final stages of the Strasbourg International but there is no coverage of the Nuremberg International. The new deal enables them to show them all but obviously some will clash with each other and other live sport so will end up on the red button. They are somewhat inflexible at the moment in that they will only show European events on BT Sport Europe and American events on ESPN. Events elsewhere in the world have to be on BT Sport 1 or 2.

That's not the case - plenty of non-European content ends up on Europe (including Scottish football and America's Cup Sailing, off the top of my head), and European football, including the Europa League, has been on ESPN.

That's right - and this Sunday we have Hereford vs Morpeth in the FA Vase Final, Grimsby vs Halifax in the FA Trophy Final and the Conference Review of the Season, all on BT Sport Europe. It's just a name. Like Monster Island.

Premier League Radio Rights were announced for the next 3 seasons this afternoon

BBC Radio 5 Live
Saturday Afternoon 1st Pick (3pm)
Saturday Lunchtime (12.30pm)
Sunday Afternoon (4pm)
Monday Nights (8pm)
Friday Nights
Midweek Premier League Fixtures (Tues-Wed nights)
Bank Holidays Premier League Fixtures

talkSPORT
Saturday Afternoon Matches (5.30pm)
Sunday Afternoon Matches (1.30pm)

talkSPORT2
Saturday Afternoon 2nd pick (3pm)

Basically it is the same as the last two rights cycles but talkSPORT 2 have picked up the Saturday afternoon 3pm 2nd pick which Absolute Radio have dropped instead they are doing Rock 'N' Roll Football with Rob Beckett and Ian Wright starting next season.

talkSPORT have kept their weekend matches and will keep their successful Around the Grounds format from 3pm-5pm on a Saturday afternoon on the main station with the extra match on their sister station however have lost the rights to 5 Live for Wednesday Night Premier League matches.

5 Live actually increase rights which is a pleasant slight surprise given talk of BBC cutbacks,, they have taken the midweek games off talksport and are also covering the new friday night games alongside what they had already.

I was talking specifically about tennis where they have stuck to this rule, I see they are more flexible than I had thought.

Well, TalkSport no doubt will (with the backing of the vacuous RadioCentre) moan about how it's so unfair that the BBC are using licence fee money, to destroy their business model by bidding for the commentary rights. Blah, blah ect ect.

Good news for BBC Radio Sport.

Much prefer their commentary to the shouting nonsense of TalkRubbish.

Did TalkSport lose some rights due to lower bids? They do seem to be stretching themselves a bit thinly at the moment having just launched 3 new national stations

Also plenty of baseball and basketball on BTS1 and 2.

They've only lost a few games on Wednesday nights. Currently 5 Live have any Tuesday night games, Talksport any Wednesday ones. Under the new deal 5 Live have both. Talksport have picked up second pick on Saturday 3pm games without difficulty because Absoloute decided not to bid for them. So they've lost a bit - but picked up the least valuable package to boost Talksport 2 a bit - 5 Live have gained a few games but it's largely unchanged.

'bit thinly' is also a very good description of the DAB bit rates for these new stations. Wink

But, anyway - back on topic.

The DAB bit rate wasn't the issue when they first launched, the audio sounded poor however you listened. Sounded a bit of a rush job altogether, probably why they've not had that much publicity eigher

What do people think of the idea of the commentary and presentation "pod", used by Sky Sports last night in the Natwest T20 bash game between Essex and Surrey? I must say, it seemed ok, but not sure about having it open to the elements. Don't know what was wrong with the traditional commentary position, as used in test matches. Interesting concept though.
