ITV [Breakfast] now own that 0600-0925 period, so in theory they should be able to broadcast beyond that point without the "Switch". Might the only reason they haven't pursued to do away with this "franchise" is to stop UTV/STV broadcasting their own programmes during that period instead? Instead UTV/STV have to oblige that 0600-0925 belongs to ITV Breakfast.
I think everyone is looking into this a bit much. GMB and Lorraine are produced by different teams with different editors. The GMB editor can decide to drop things from their running order if they go over time but it wouldn't be right for them to run into Lorraine's slot and leave her production team to clean up and make up the time before 9.25.
It's true, that in the mid 1990s, the Disney Club, on GMTV, carried on over into the 09:25 slot, finishing I think at 09:55. I can't confirm this, but STV did have a stake in GMTV at the time, and so I wonder if STV co produced Disney Club, which allowed this arrangement, of going beyond 09:25, to take place.
Not sure but I remember that there was an ad break which finished just before 9:25 followed by the “splat” which meant GMTV had finished and then the next part of the programme began. There was no “see you tomorrow 6:00-9:25” sting from GMTV or any regional (or CITV) ident at this point.
How is regional content (ads and news) handled during ITV Breakfast’s hours? Is it the same system (and path to transmitters etc) that deals with it during the rest of the day? What about STV? Are they effectively treated like ITV plc regions fruiting this time?

Yes. It could have also been sheer exasperation that caused the sudden cut, the director having effectively lost control and the presenters failing to finish the show on time.

I'd imagine so, although TV-AM had a completely separate path which the regions could not override.
In the very early days when regional news was introduced to breakfast, I would have imagined that GMTV came through regional TX centres as an outside source like any other programme, but the continuation of the 09:25 splat suggests that not to be the case?
