I've watched The Cube on Challenge this week so far and it is just as good as I remember, It's a shame they are not using the original broadcast advert breaks though but am glad it has started from the beginning.

Challenge still managed to pull a rabbit out of the hat.

That's good, as they only had the first 2 series when they showed it before, I think.

They did that with the first series of Gladiators. Rather than using the original intros and outros, they'd have one silent break bumper to go into the adverts with (meaning the same game was in the background every time there was a break) and cut straight back to "welcome back to Gladiators" instead of the intro. I'm not sure if Series 1 used to be in Challenge/FTN's library back in the day, but none of the other series' have this butchering present.

Series 1 of Gladiators was aired on Ftn, I remember it as one of the episodes had a very long "part 1", which was the best part of half an hour which was unusual at the time as a two ad-break programme was typically anywhere from 15mins to 20 minutes in and anywhere up to 25minutes after that.

It is a shame that Challenge feel they have to shoehorn an extra break in to hour-long programmes, it's understandable to a degree with stuff like Total Wipeout that originally aired on the BBC but I don't think it was that long ago they used to air hour-long shows with the original breaks, certainly in the Sky days that has happened but was more common under previous ownership.

In fact I think it may now only be the Richard O'Brien episodes of Crystal Maze as an example of an hour-long programme with only two internal breaks - anything else that doesn't already have a third break gets it shoehorned in.

Maybe they could show Take Your Pick back to back with Deal or No Deal as it is essentially the same mechanic.

Take you pick is more fun and fast pacing

You would normally expect the newer format to be pacier but I guess they didn't do the laboured, tension building pauses so much 20+ years ago.

DOND did it to the point it was ridiculous. Then they extended the show by 15 minutes and made it even worse.

I've noticed watching tonight they seem to have made some other weird editing, such as when the game is introduced they sort of skip the bit where it zooms out from Phillip and the contestant to show The Cube and the game title! Unless it was like that in the originals but I don't think it was...

They haven't butchered Phil quite as badly as they did on Winning Lines yet I suppose!
