Well, it's four walls with a lighting grid, TV studio floor and soundproofing, so not just any four walls.
This isn't just a four walled room, this is an M&S four walled room, with lumesenent lighting dangling from a perfect pantograph, lightly coooled by sumptuous silent air conditioning...
It's also the largest studio in English Regions and was built as a full-spec production studio. The interiors for the early series of Byker Grover were shot there and one or two other shows too including the late 80s/early 90s revival of Juke Box Jury, with Jools Holland as chairman.
That said, I'd doubt very much if it would happen. Like Southampton, which also has a generously sized (but slightly smaller than Newcastle's) production studio, they've got very used to having a standing set in there for their regional news programmes. Southampton also has a second studio but AFAIK it doesn't have a set installed in it currently.
Yep - the BBC Elstree studio site has been upgraded quite significantly over recent years, with upgraded green rooms and dressing rooms, as well as significant improvements made to Studio D.
Sky's "A League of Their Own" has been shot there for quite a while. AIUI Children In Need will probably come from there as well.
But not all the staff have moved since the technical stuff is still at TVC, so its still active isnt it.
Yes, just. I did have a bit of difficulty persuading the security guards to let me in this morning, though.
That's otherwise a fairly well-researched article - perhaps there's a Guardian lurker on here who found out about the Urbi et Orbi thing
There were plenty of staff around the building at the weekend using their last opportunity to take pictures - many of which are beginning to appear on flickr.
Walked past TVC today. The only access into the building now is via the front gates. Main reception and the side entrances are all closed off, the gates have been drawn across the multi-story car park which I've never seen before. It was before dark but the base of Helios and Stage Door were all lit up. The place was totally dead aside from the security guards sat in the booths. It was a bit haunting!
Interestingly there were quite a few bikes in the bike park in the now closed side entrance by White City station. Given how long it would take to walk from the main gates through to that entrance with a bike (you'd have to take it through the building) I wonder if those bikes were simply abandoned/forgotten by their original owners?!
Anyone notice how in this shot from that collection of images that in the middle of the three plasmas that after all this time it still shows something from BBC News circa 2006.
The middle plasma is showing some BBC News technical idents used by SCAR to identify circuits (they are often accompanied by a line ident with a BBC News music mix bed). If BBC News are lining up a circuit (say to feed to another broadcaster, or to another bit of the BBC) that is what will be used to identify the circuit prior to the feed in many cases.
These are never 'for broadcast' - and generated totally separately, and nothing to do with the on-air look. Other broadcasters might just use colour bars etc.
