The logo appears at the beginning but disappears in the middle of the ident.
It's always done that since the box moved to the right. It's consistent with all the other idents of course, whereas the Network version fades in half-way through instead of fading out.

It's funny how in Wales and NI (I think. The only time I saw it on NI in June where they played Version B) that they show the box at the beginning of the ident whilst in England and Scotland the box appears in the middle of the ident. That's regional idents for ya!

Right, I'm lost here. The network idents follow the same fading practice as the regions, with the logo being present until the '2' formation.

I'm sorry, I tend to go off topic. The Wales Mirror ident has the box appear at the beginning whilst the network version shows the box once the 2 had formed. That is what I mean.
The transitions from symbol to programme aren't a new idea, in every sense - it's very true that over time they don't seem to have developed much, if at all.
Been used on BBC 2 for as long as I can remember, but definitely more seldom seen into the 1990s... You'd still get the odd use even circa 2000 - for example a zooming circle transition when showing The Good Life, I assume to tie in with the titles - but a similarly basic wipe. Network's montage of BBC 2 symbols on the last night of the yellow era used the simple linear wipe throughout. No more fancy than two decades previous, but it did the job.
Anything too complex could probably look worse... Some of the highly-animated spins, squashes and fly outs that were 'cutting edge' in the 1980s, unless they were really well tailored to the picture, can look fairly hilarious now. The more common cut or cross-fade still works best.
Interesting that The Review Show still always starts right after Newsnight with only an ident in between, never a single trail or anything. A leftover from its previous form as Newsnight Review perhaps, as if the two still can't quite be parted. I can't recall any other junction ever being so minimal to the point of a programme ending and going straight into the ident for the next programme.
