The whole channel portfolio needs a shake up. There simply isn’t enough content to match the number of BBC channels. Far better to work out what content they actually have and figure out how many channels that needs, no? There is very little of the news channel that isn’t simulcast elsewhere for example. BBC2 is just nothing these days. Maybe they need to look at what Sky are doing - genre-specific channels rather than generic. Entertain, inform, educate. Simple.

At risk of wild fantasy scheduling *IF* BBC Three was to make some form of return whether they'd consider something along the lines of...
* BBC One: 24hr
* BBC Two: 24hr
* CBBC: 6am to 8pm (share with BBC Three)
* BBC Three: 8pm to 6am
* BBC Parliament: 6am to 9pm (share with BBC Four)
* BBC Four: 9pm to 6am
* CBeebies: 6am to 7pm (share with BBC Scotland on Freeview)
* BBC Scotland: 7pm to 12am (12pm to midnight on other platforms)
* BBC News: 24hr
Realistically if they were to increase BBC Three's budget BBC Four would end up taking at least a partial hit to it's hours and/or budget. I rather doubt they'd fully return BBC Three to it starting at 7pm given CBBC's current hours. I also wonder whether BBC Parliament really needs to broadcast 24hrs, though unless it was sharing space with another channel any savings would be minimal.

"BBC Two" sounds more fitting...
Perhaps merge BBC Three and BBC Four and give it generic name ‘BBC Choice’ has a good ring to it.

Surely the main problem with that idea is that Parliament sits late most evenings, with some important votes taking place after the proposed switch to BBC 4.

Its an interesting idea but IMHO it wouldn't be cost effective. Sky have enough content to have genre-specific channels e.g. Sky Sports Football.
If the BBC went down that route then it may end up like this Warning....fantasy schedule ahead
BBC Dramas (EastEnders, Doctor Who,The Split etc)
BBC Hobbies (Homes Under The Hammer, Top Gear, The Repair Shop etc)
BBC Comedy
BBC Kids (Combining CBBC and Cbeebies)
BBC Now (A tv version of 5 live with rolling news and sport, the red button could be used in case a major parliamentary debate is clashing with an FA Cup tie)
It would be like stretching blu-tac plus Britbox would suffer.

Fantasy thread.
I love BBC Four but needs a bigger budget.
BBC One+1 was not allowed by Ofcom.
So
Merge BBC Two and BBC Four (and BBC Two benefits)
Put BBC Three back on from 8pm after CBBC.
Launch a revamped BBC Choice, a best of the BBC Channel 4/7 (repeat) channel/extra sport and music channel

BBC3 once made a sort of half-hearted attempt at a panel show-within-sitcom with that Rob Brydon thing I can never remember the title of ('Reeling Back the Years' - although that could easily have just been the title of the fictional panel show). Both aspects of the show were actually entertaining enough on their own terms (I've certainly seen real panel shows that were much worse), but obviously it was ultimately neither fish nor fowl. I don't remember them bothering to even try with the panel show format, otherwise.
Only Connect has never been the same since they took it away from BBC Four and shoved it away on BBC2. No midnight repeat, for one thing.
I always thought bbc three could do with a few panel shows, but I also thought QI and HIGNFY would be more bbc four

I really wonder how much benefit returning as a linear channel would bring to BBC Three. I know friends’ teenage kids for whom the idea of a TV schedule, and having to wait for a specific time to watch a programme, seems bizarre in the extreme these days. Surely a linear BBC Three would be an irrelevance to the younger end of the channel’s demographic at least, so as an attempt to better connect with younger adults, the benefits could be limited.
I know viewing of BBC Three programmes dropped after the axing of the old linear channel, but just assuming you can reverse the decision and everything would go back to how it was would be extremely naive given that changes in viewing habits over the past four years have been most marked in the age group they’re trying to target.
