This is unlikely to effect ratings in any major way but in addition, unless I am missing something, it is unlikely to have any cost cutting effects outside of the odd camera operator or producer.
Live at 5 now just a regular bulletin, no more 'tonight on Live at 5' etc. The voiceover was just 'This is Sky News' etc.

Whats even more baffling is, why is the UK Sky News opting for this simple form of sitting down presentation, when it is obvious the new Sky News Arabia is going in a complete different direction? The You tube of the Sky News Arabia Set that was posted on here a few weeks ago shows multiple presentation points!

I cannot see how its cost cutting either unless operators for cameras news wall etc perhaps, this must be something like an editorial change for a reason. Names and sets are the things that have changed would this have anything to do with branding? So is this a sign of the channel sale nearing?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this could this be an attempt at boosting ratings in a slightly flawed way, or at least clarifying the point of Sky News as a news channel? News Channels always get larger ratings during rolling news coverage - Tsunamis, Earthquakes, Kermit the frog passing away suddenly etc. - at which point all onair branding becomes very generic. Given that pretty much all the main news bulletins (excluding Sunrise, Murnaghan and Boulton & co) use the same content anyway, perhaps this is Sky subtly trying to clarify its remit, accepting that the largest number of people tune in to see the news, rather than to watch Kay Burley walk to a weird podium with "Afternoon Live" over the top. Of course we don't know this is permanent, but so far this year there's been a lot more serious, rolling news coverage than on average and maybe they're recognising multiple brands aren't particularly helpful. I think if Live at Five had dramatically different coverage, content or remit it might have avoided the brand-chop, but with Live at Five and Sky News at Six practically being the same programme it's harder to justify sparing the name.

I think there is a strong possibility that they have looked at the very good ratings in recent weeks and decided to really focus on the rolling news aspect of the channel and do away with any 'appointment to view' style features. I am not suggesting that they think these changes will keep the viewers figures as high as the last 3 weeks or so, just that they want to simplify the schedule to focus on rolling news. Knowing the usual line from Sky management it may be described as a streamlining of Sky News programming in a 'multi platform' world. I can see the sense in only giving different titles to shows with different content (Boulton and Co, Jeff Randall Live and to a lesser extent Sunrise).
My issue with is why they can't get the balance right in terms of presentation. Presenting all the news perched on a podium or at the newswall is not necessary (and the island was horribly designed) but on the other hand the other extreme of sticking with one close up camera angle for the whole day is not the right approach either. A uniformed presentation that uses the studio to its full potential is the best option but I accept that for the majority of viewers today's changes will go unnoticed.

Floor Managers. Gallery staff (more simplified output).
A sad day for Sky News IMHO - when you think about what it once was...saying that I still think there journalism is top notch.

I would be interested to see what Sky have to say about this major change. They obviously have some reasoning to their madness...It's A pity no one can understand what reasoning it is though?
No presenters have tweeted about it so far...
No reply to my e-mails either...

Just for anyone interested and hasn't seen it - this is how the studio looks Pod-less...
