Don't think so.

I think the black sidebars are just an effect of the capture card.

I watched a little of the 18:30 programme and it filled my huge 16:9 without any black bars at all.

No it isn't, it is BBC South's output, heres another capture from this evening taken just before 7 after BBC South opted back to the network, as you can see hardly any bar as its "fully" widescreen and even that bar disappeared when the BBC One trails/ident/programming begins.

you'd think bbc south would use the correct logo on their titles wouldn't you. south should be in title case rather than upper case.

and whats with them trying to look like breakfast? it only serves to confuse the viewers who understand what breakfast is, and what south today is - but pretending to be a hybrid of the two is silly. there would only be a point to it if there was evidence that people turned over when local news came on in the morning- but i don't think that's the case.

What does a capture of a 16:9 ITV-1 or C4 programme look like ? Both those channels broadcast at 704 x 576.

Put The Telly On
Meridian Tonight SE - still unbearable! Sangeeta has some weird obsession to just blurt out laughter and use small talk when totally unnecessary. Grrrrrrr! Thats excluding the fact she misses cue, forgets which camera she's on etc etc.

At least they appear to have dropped the awful "Moan at Moody" - should have been "Moan at Meridian" imo.

Urgh, that looks horibly daytimey GMTV brightish muck. I prefered red. It was in need of a new look, but if it means this, then I'd rather not.

South Today has gone downhill in the last few months, too many lifestyle features, and less news, especially from my area.

Put The Telly On
Well Meridian Tonight SE just dedicated their whole news programme to the Tour De France leaving about a 2 minute recap for main headlines. Now I know the Tour De France is going to be a big event in the South East but when you look at BBC South East Today who have got the news story balance right it looks ridiculous. What's worse is having to put up with Sangeeta and her random blurts of sudden excitement every five seconds. Rolling Eyes

They are both half hour programmes for crying out loud. Meridian SE has gone downhill....(and not on a bike!).

Aggreed - Sally seems to be the only person keeping it afloat. And Georgie Palmer is really starting to irritate me with her presenting forecasts from some insignificant pub somewhere.

They actually zoomed in on the cameraman, Sally mentioned him as the two went to the Antarctic its not a usual shot shown, hence the hole in the wall behind the projection screen.

That was all spoof. The cameras there are robotic, they don't normally have an operator stood behind them.

I wonder if the output is 704 x 576 rather than 720 x 576. That might explain the narrow side bars as seen in 'underscan' ?

Possible - though it is worth remembering that full 16:9 (and 4:3) for that matter is only 702x576.

The 720x576 figure is wider than 16:9 or 4:3 - and was introduced with digital video techniques to avoid clipping edges of signals when they passed through multiple analogue/digital conversions. This was to avoid ringing etc.

704x576 is the nearest MPEG2 multiple to 702x576 and still captures a full 16:9 or 4:3 signal.

In other words - a 702x576 (and thus a 704x576) signal displayed on a 16:9 or 4:3 display should fill the screen if the display is configured correctly. When captured on a PC capture card then you might see varying width black lines - but on a properly adjusted display you shouldn't.

HOWEVER - studio cameras often have slightly variable blanking edges - particularly if they are based on analogue triax (ISTR that most BBC regions have moved to GrassValley - nee Thomson - 1707s which are one of the few cameras to have digital triax though)

I haven't seen South Today since it relaunched - but it is conceivable that they have just switched the studio cameras to 16:9 and are still running with a PAL analogue infrastructure (as Plymouth seem to be) - which would mean all bets are off when it comes to wandering blanking.
