A user posted this topic earlier in the day however, it had to be removed as the post broke royal embargo press rules. Lyse's well deserved OBE can now be discussed.
True but women can get a raw deal when it comes to kudos - the attention is more on looks compared to men - surely you agree to that point??
Here isn't really the place to discuss gender ethics.
I'm as pleased for her, as I am all the other people who've been awarded OBE's. In fact, I congratulated Lyse, on her Facebook wall as soon as I heard the news.
Stephen Sutton received an OBE, his work was outstanding also - and is a great role model for all boys out there, especially those with cancer.
I made a point that is all - if there are areas about journalists which I cannot discuss then that has never been made apparent - your point also mentioned gender. I am not going to lower myself to drag a dead boy into this!
Indeed well done Lyce - fantastic journalist and great role model for women journos.
Normally we can be seen as the dolly birds behind a desk occasionally flashing our pins, but we can hack it out there with the blokes!!!
Kate Adie and co changed a lot of perceptions and I celebrate this as a woman.
She's a great role model for any upcoming journalist, regardless of gender STV - to be honest.
It's her skill, expertise and knowledge that's important. Gender shouldn't play a factor in who gets an OBE.
If that's the case, you could say Daniel Day Lewis is a fantastic role model for any upcoming male actor.
Have male actors been under-represented, under-appreciated, and been generally discriminated against in the acting profession?
It's fair to say that a successful woman, in a profession where women have been discriminated against, is going to be a role model for women in the industry, and those looking to enter it, for overcoming such issues that are still prevalent.

I was merely raising the point that people should be rewarded on merit.
Lyse absolutely deserves her OBE. She's an outstanding reporter and has produced some wonderful work in the field (in often very difficult circumstances).
Putting a gender card into play and saying "the dolly birds behind a desk occasionally flashing our pins" and "we can hack it out there with the blokes" is actually quite sexist and undermines the work of all female (and male) journos out there.
They're my feelings anyway, regardless of whether they are right or wrong.

In what way is it sexist to highlight the prejudicial views that exist, and then say that women can do just as good a job as men?
Sorry for breaking the embargo. I genuinely didn't realise at the time of posting the original thread yesterday morning.
Anyway, amidst the war zone already building-up in this thread, its probably quite apt to say congratulations to Lyse on her award. Its nothing to do with gender, but rather her formidable actions and contribution to journalism on a worldwide platform, representing the BBC.
Okay, it is fine I think someone leaked it on twitter first and as a journalist, it slightly annoyed me as if I posted it I would get shot in the head.
Women are well represented this year, 49% of honours are awarded to women and 51% men.
