Are Ruth Wignall and Carl Edwards weather presenters, aswell as newsreaders?

Doubt it.

The black panels look as bad as I thought they would but what I liked about that was a snappy headline sequence - too often now on both the BBC and ITV the headline sequence seems to go on forever.

Also does the breakfast presenter usually do the lunchtime news for ITV Wales, as having one anchor means you can't have one do the Lunchtime News and the other the late bulletin.

I agree with you there, but I think the headlines should always be pre-titles rather than post. On ITV it seems so much worse as the title music tails off/fades out as if the programme is meant to start, but instead the regions run a bed under the final beat which makes it 10x worse. Looks very amateur-ish.

The titles and bed are designed to work that way, if not they wouldn't all do it...

To me, the titles and bed only really work when the bed is before the titles and the titles are faded in for the duration of the 'sprinkle' at the start. The bed does work after the titles if there is a pause, rather than running it straight away.

Ruth covered for Andrea as one of the two main presenters on the 6pm bulletin for the last year. Carl covered Ruth on the weather. Now that Ruth is back presenting the weather after a year away im guessing Carl will no longer present the weather.

I quite liked the new studios, hopefully the shorter bulletins will use the entire studios not just the small screen.

And yes the same presenter usually does the GMB bulletins and the lunchtime update, apart from on Fridays when one of the 6pm presenters used to do the lunchtime bulletin. One day a few weeks ago Ruth did the GMB, lunchtime and 6pm bulletin, they were really short on cover that day apparently.

So with ITV Wales reinstating a proper name for their programme, does this open the floodgates for other regions to do so. I.e London Tonight.

Hopefully not, 'cause it's a mess of branding now - I like the return of the Wales at Six brand in principle but the astons are still labelled Cymru Wales - which is what the short bulletins are still branded as, except they're not because they don't even say the Cymru bit, it's just the ITV News "in Wales" - and of course the reporters sign off with plain old ITV News anyway.

(At least Granada Reports is just that, bar the occasional dual-branded intro and the report sign-offs - was a smart decision to go back to using the same brand for all bulletins IMO. And I think it works well with the regions using 'ITV News +region' verbally for everything too.)

Mixed feelings on the set but the graphics are much improved - the old astons were shockingly poor quality. No ITV Wales HD yet of course but it's looking much sharper.

The black bit is just a mistake, yes?! It's horrible and you can see the gap in the close up shots too. Really can't understand why that has made it to air. That said, the studio is nice. (It's a shame for us in the south that Meridian had their big overhaul a few years too early! Guess we're stuck with the sofa and a dated looks for some time)

And in Yorkshire where Calendar moved just a few months before the new look and took the same set with them (or at least a set they got from somewhere else that looked the same)

I must say black parts aside how well the rest of the set looks. The desk especially is a lot nicer than the London tonight and Granada reports being a proper desk rather than a coffee table thing.

The studio if itself is of course just a copy/mixture of London & Granada, but must admit it does look nice, very good. Not sure if single headed works or not- i for like two presenter in Tyne Tees. Local news is more than just news IMO, it often feature more lighter stories and not sure if single headed, desk and chair is a bit serious.

Woah...huh?! Who thought that looked good? There are some decent elements to this new set scheme ITV is using but there are somethings defo wrong with this version.
Firstly the major problem as most have point out are the black bars. I just dont get it. Sorry. I find it odd. I think it they were going to do a virtual window. they could have taken a few large format LCD's and turned them vertical and kept the "mullions" between the windows and it would have more window like. Here is an example of how NBC affiliates are achieving the virtual window feeling.

Secondly, who did the lighting....yeeesh! Its lit up like a government benefit office. The light is cold and harsh. They likely using the cooler more efficient lights possibly. But it makes the presenter look like a talking cadaver. Needs some gels to warm up the set and create some depth. Everything looks flat. Then you get those "dead spots" in the corners, especially by the silvery-looking column. It actually could have turned out quite nice, but IMO opinion didnt quite make it. So sad.
