Interesting they're being allowed to use 'Wales at 6'. I'd have thought the branding posse would be summoning ITV News Wales on them though maybe they've realised that the general public would probably never call the programme that, most likely still calling it HTV News.

Well as said above, the name states ITV News Wales at 6. If anything it strengthens the ITV News Wales brand.

Does it? Surely one name for all News programmes in Wales is better? As for people saying about Central's 'At 6' programme...they got rid of that name, as people around here just tended to call it 'Central News' no matter the time of the bulletin. Most people still call it that these days too, not 'At 6', 'Central Tonight' or even the present 'ITV News Central' (which is the best of the three in my opinion).

I do agree a consistent "ITV News REGION" is best but no reason why it can't be "From ITV News Wales, this is Wales at Six" etc.

ITV News Wales should be the name in my opinion. The Granada Reports name should have been scrapped too, in favour of ITV News Granada. If you're going to rebrand then do it properly!

ITV News North West, surely?

The significance of the Granada brand as a regional identifier is long dead, so why keep it for this single area?

You're clearly not in the Granada region. They may be refined to news now but brands like Granada, Central, Calendar and Meridian are still important and losing them completely would just be dumb.

They have actually tried to unify all the bulletins under one name even in Granada though. Previously shorter bulletins were branded as Granada News, and the weekday 6 o'clock half-hour bulletin was branded Granada Reports. Now all bulletins are branded Granada Reports, which is a little confusing.

This is going way off topic but I've never been a fan of the Granada Reports branding anyway, though I did grow up with Granada Tonight so it had zero nostalgic value to me.

Taking it back on topic I was surprised that the Wales at Six brand wasn't revived when the bulletin moved back to 6pm in 1999 - and again in 2004 when they were looking for a new name having dropped the HTV News branding.

But for us who grew up in the North West, Granada Reports actually started in 1973 and the changed to Granada Tonight in 1990, but I honestly cannot think of anyone who called it that but continued to call it Granada Reports and then in 2001 Granada relented and changed its name back to Granada Reports!

Branding works a treat, especially with long-standing names! Wink

Central obviously means central so people in that region will be happy with the name! And I believe that Meridian means 'of the south' in Latin. It's nice to have different region names to the BBC.

I was talking about the name for the Welsh programme at first. Was using the Granada region as an example where I feel the old branding 'Granada Reports' should be changed to just 'ITV News Granada'. Therefore I feel Wales should just be 'ITV News Wales', no matter the time of the programme. Sorry for the confusion.

I think the main reason the North East Tonight worked was because it was essentially "the all new Mike Neville show"

By the looks of it Wales will be going single headed.
