Why does this need to be compared to a local US news set? They have nothing in common...

Really? At least in the photos posted in this thread, the backgrounds of the two sets look similar. (LCD displays within rectangular panels.)

The "Americanophobia" and insularity of some members of this forum sometimes verges on the irrational.

The image seemed shoehorned in, to me. We can all imagine what vertically-mounted screens look like without the seemingly mandatory US example from Mouseboy.

We don't need to see the US equivalent of absolutely everything, much the same way we don't need to see the French equivalent, or Mexican equivalent, or the Nigerian equivalent. There needs to be a link back for it to be a relevant or interesting comparison, and not tedious or obsessive.

So back to topic, away from the matters of forum politics:

I think the black bars are meant to reflect the set and crew in a dull light, but it's not quite worked! A temporary stopgap perhaps? The lighting is almost like house lights, it doesn't look like it's been configured properly - unless that's the caps we've got on this site!

Most news studios have lamps with no gels (yes?), and if using LED's a cooler 'bluey-white' is used rather than an 'orangey-white' from the halogen (?) lamps. I'd wash orange and teal light on the set walls and pillars, and a 'Wales at Six' gobo on the floor.

Studios with traditional tungsten lamps will still have plenty of gels in use. They're often colour correction gels (rather than artistic ones) to match the colour temperature of the lamps to the colour temperature of the studio screens. There may be some diffusion (trace) over key lights too to make them less harsh to look at (although diffusion should properly be used to soften light from key lights, a lot of presenters don't like looking directly towards un-diffused keylights).

Most Colour Correction gels are blue or orange (known as CTB/CT and CTO) although there are a few other correction gels for matching flourescent tubes and even taking away colours that may be cast, especially from things like chroma-key cloths.

Modern LED key lamps are adjustable however in the colour temperature they produce, so increasingly you may well see fewer gels in use in news studios where key lights are still used. That said, a lot of news studios are simply lit soft. This wouldn't appear to be the way the new Cardiff studio is lit.

It has to be said - I reckon those shiny black panels are a lighting director's nightmare - it's hardly surprising there are reflections of the keys!!!

I remember when this forum used to be about the excitement and detail of TV presentation. It would, sadly, appear to have been taken over by pre-menstrual women. (or angst-ridden teenagers). It's a real shame. I used to come here every day for interesting news and gossip about developments in one of the most exciting, passionate industries there is. I now just sigh when I click on the page. I fear I may be coming to the end of my TV forum days.

Well, that's the first time I've been called a pre-menstrual woman. Confused

Broadcasting is definitely one of the most passionate industries out there, but sadly that also results in the kind of sillyness that we've seen in this thread.

Back on topic, if the virtual windows were the right way around, it would look very impressive. As the virtual windows are right now, they look a little silly. Now, say those black bands matched the white of the rest of the studio, it wouldn't look anywhere near as silly.

Just flicked on to ITV Wales and it's showing "Westcountry East"(presumably what used to be known as ITV West). What's happened?

It's still known as ITV West here... Smile Many in Bristol still call it HTV too...

The "Westcountry East" edition is just a full ITV West programme now anyway - no more Devon & Cornwall news anymore! It should be renamed ITV News West, instead of ITV News West Country. Also, the website should be shown on air as "itv.com/west", not "itv.com/westcountryeast" - just a bit silly in my opinion! It redirects to itv.com/news/WEST anyway!

Oddily, over at BBC Points West, on air, they're always referring to the region as the "West Country"... hmm :/

In answer to me own question it seems there were sound problems affecting ITV Wales. A regional ad during the ITV News at 6:30 or whatever it's called had no sound either although the other ads either side were fine (which confused me as to why this would happen as I thought all play out was from London with no opting done locally).

I presume the Bristol/Bath version didn't issue an apology to Welsh viewers because it was the recorded one tonight. At least I didn't see one.

Sad news today. Former HTV News presenter Steve Taylor has died, aged 65.

Just found a copy of what I consider to be the best regional news theme of all time

Lots of people preferred the BBC Wales Today titles of the same era, but I love the way this combines the Welsh National Anthem with Men of Harlech.
