That actually looks ok, better than the overly bright red light boxes in various other regional sets. Plus it’s a small part of the set.

East Midlands, for example the red light boxes overpower the red sofa so much, it’s quite nasty.

Personally I quite like that angle making use of the side monitor, particularly during Breakfast. It's perhaps interesting to note that whilst Norwich now use a sofa Cambridge still mainly use the desk. (That said Cambridge sometimes opt for a seat & 'coffee table' combination, particularly for specials and pre-recorded pieces.) I think the bigger issue is perhaps the barco(?) monitors on the back wall, which particularly in Norwich don't look too good. Ideally they would benefit from being replaced, though limited budgets probably prevents this.

Doesn't Norwich just have two projectors, one each side, with the back wall being the standard English Regions 'Lightbox + twinkling lights' fake newsroom printed backdrop? (i.e. the backdrop is just a bit of set, rather than a video device?). There are some vertical-only seams in the acrylic panels in front (as acrylic comes in fixed sizes) with the diffusions frosting design on it.

Certainly no "Barco" wall in the accepted sense (which is a grid of smaller DLP projector cubes making up a larger screen with visible 'seams')

(Barco actually make a range of projector, LED-matrix etc. products, but because the BBC News studios in the mid-00s to early-10s had a wall of Barco cubes, 'Barco' has become shorthand here for a projector cube wall)

Correct.

Surely after nearly a decade they can justify having a new set? It all looks rather tired now in my opinion! Go back to the newsroom Smile

It's down to individual programme budgets - maybe the Norwich budget is split between them and Cambridge and therefore they feel they can't do one and not the other?

Especially after you consider not long back Midlands Today basically got a rounded version of the same set that was only introduced back in 2013.

Maybe something to celebrate their 60th birthday next year?!

MTD got a different set - larger screens, their 10 year old recycled rear projector screen was finally retired and numerous lighting changes - visually it may have been similar but the layout, the parts were all very different as was the hardware driving it.

Their set was also 5 years old when it was replaced (2012-2017).

LE is in need of serious upgrades though, but it may be more political than you think, such as split programme budgets.

Problem is a lot of the gallery technology in Norwich is hanging on by a thread. Apparently the tech team had to raid TVC for spares for their cameras and gallery as most of it is now obsolete. The logical thing would be for Norwich and Cambridge to share the Cambridge set and put out a joint programme while Norwich gets a full revamp, including gallery and set. Cambridge would just need a new set and would obviously take less time. The handy thing about the Norwich studio is the fact its slightly rounded, so if and when they upgrade it a circular set would fit in the space quite nicely. However, the studio is very small.

It all comes down to budgets of course, but the screens in Norwich are absolutely dreadful now, they're scuffed, washed out and the whole thing looks rather shabby these days.

Like many English regions. The horrific Thomson 1707s (which Millbank and many English regions had, but TVC was never blighted with - but AIUI they aren't hugely different to the 1757s TVC used before they went Sony) can't go soon enough. Their pictures are horrific...

Pretty much EVERY SD gallery is now obsolete. Norwich is nothing special...

When I was up at Leeds the other month their lighting desk was only running thanks to a bodge with a PC power supply sat on top of it. There's a shortage of quality new kit country wide. The impression I've had is that everyone knows the regions need investment, but nobody wants to sign off on an upgrade which will be outdated in 12 months.
