A few years ago I used to wonder (and indeed comment on here) about the reasoning behind putting fairly low-ranking presenters on the overnight simulcast shift, usually as cover (I'm thinking the likes of Janat Jalil, Susan Osman, Richard Forrest). As mentioned on here before, it's always primetime somewhere!

I don't really feel that Alastair Yates is a "low-ranking presenter", but it seems the only time he worked when he was still with the BBC was on overnights. I wonder why.

People generally don't like having to work in the middle of the night. If you're trying to climb the ladder you'll put up with it, if you don't have to you won't.

And I guess it worked quite well for Martine Croxall... strike day presenter, then overnight presenter, now main presenters for BBC NC.

Will Gavin Grey be the new Martine Croxall then?

I think Sophie Long is the new Martine Croxall...

it would be good to see Gavin Grey present more!

It so wouldn't.

So Carrie Gracie flying solo this morning on BBC News (without that trying to sound like something a Radio 1 DJ would say). Simon McCoy, I've concluded - from his Twitter feed and my observations - only appears every other Friday. Whilst I'd expect him to do today of all celebrated days of the year he's absent but I'm sure will make up for it on Monday.

If Carrie continues to 1pm it would be impressive. I hope today is treated like a weekend-like-day for BBC News. A shortage of presenters, please, and no - no Gavin Grey or Chris Rogers, today, thank you very much. Whilst they are both fine in presenting skill I find the strike days and last-minute vacancies are the only options for them at the moment. They're facing stiff competition.

On Good Friday last year, just so you know, we had this:
0900 Tim Willcox
1100 Tim Willcox & Julia Somerville
1400 Sophie Long
1830 Julian Worricker
2230 Chris Rogers
This year will be different, I'm sure.

Hopefully Carrie Gracie could go double-headed with Sophie Long or Chris Eakin in the next shift, and end up presenting the BBC One news like on New Year's Day (except she remained solo until 2pm that day).

When was the last time that Julia was on BBC news?

It must have been six months ago - I do wonder whether she's coming back, though she has disappeared for that long in the past and then suddenly shows up on Saturday bulletins/NC for a week or two.

I suppose filiming the Rip Off Britain show with Angela Rippon and Gloria Hunniford takes up most of her time now.

Chris Eakin and Sophie Long on at the moment. There was a time filler 'Five Minutes with' on before that.

I must admit I was suspicious of whether there'd be any double headers today...
Julia Somerville only joined Tim Willcox at 11am last year for Good Friday as she was contracted for the week on that shift - she was not to be moved from it just for a Christian celebration.
Perhaps, then, today will be like any other day. I'm pretty sure we'll be seeing Matthew Amroliwala, today, and Julian Worricker isn't set to miss a shift as he's only down for one day a week.

Chris Eakin: I can't help but feel sorry for the man, having to be moved like that from late nights to weekends. On Twitter, in response to someone saying his newly-time appearances on the NC has attracted more views (especially on his debut on Saturday afternoons from 4-8pm), Eakin said:

Thanks @TVRatingsUK for pointing out a ratings success. I'm putting it all down to me. cc Channel Controller @samtaylornews

As much as Chris is the best person for the late shift (though Martine Croxall is also very good - there can be something quite relaxing about both of their deliveries, which I don't think Clive's quite got down currently), it's nice to see more of him during the day. I don't think, compared to a couple of years ago, the news channel currently has the best selection of newsreaders.

I'm sorry, but what? This level of obsession and speculation is surely beyond what could be accepted as normal.
