A potentially interesting development / political interference (depending on how you see it)...

There is discussion in another thread about the effects of a possible merger on bulletins. It is an important part of the discussion, as one audience or both sets of audiences loose quality in their bulletins.

It's likely a scheduling anomaly or something, but I thought it was odd that Victoria Derbyshire presented Saturday PM the week before last - a slot reserved almost exclusively now for correspondents (Christian Fraser presented it this week). If the News Channel were to close or be merged, I can't imagine 'Victoria Derbyshire' would continue given its abysmal viewing figures and larger-than-usual production costs.

Roger Mosey article saying that the UK would miss out on important domestic stories if the merger went ahead.

Intrestingly, a commenter has suggested making BBC World News available to a domestic audience but without the adverts.

The biggest problems is with the merges areas shows have just been picked out of the World schedule with little thought for the UK audience. There could absolutely be more World News content on BBC News without a full merger but they need to plan it carefully and ensure it's part of a service which appeals. (Similarly I'm sure a limited number of UK bulletins would find an audience on BBC World).

For example World News Today every night would just look like an hour of world news on the channel, something which is quite reasonable to expect on a 24 hour news channel. Outside Source on the other hand just looks like a filler show.

Outside Source has news, but is delivered in a non-traditional way by BBC standards. The problem with the show isn't that it doesn't have Ros Atkins behind a desk, more that it's an international news show, the same issues that the other World simulcasts have with the exception of BBC Business Live which has a UK segment.

If I had to characterize Outside Source I would say it's more analysis driven than a anchor presenting a package. A show will typically have analysis from a presenter giving his or her interpretation of the news article or other journalists from the BBC that would never get airtime on a regular show.

I can't bear Outside Source. It's such a bitty watch - and I can't stand Ros Atkins. That is a personal preference of mine, though. He might be a perfectly decent presenter, but I just can't take to him for some reason.

I agree regarding Ros Atkins. It feels lile he's getting angry all the time, and it's uncomfortable to watch. The show's music annoys me aswell.

I'm not keen on the titles or stings. It's very "here you go work experience kid, here's a DV camera. Treat yourself!". And I say DV camera because I find the quality of the shots awful!

If nothing else, it’s been a good week for the case for keeping a domestic news channel.

Oddly on the 4pm TOTH on the NC with Clive Myrie I could briefly hear the audio from BBC World News with Matthew Amroliwala.
