Though it's interesting if you look elsewhere in the world, 30 minute bulletins often air as normal at weekends - e.g. the US, Canada, RTE in Ireland, Australia. There is some flexibility with times, but even then the 'default' slot is often the same as on weekdays.

Although, how many of those international broadcasters have numerous ad breaks during their news bulletins, unlike the BBC?

ABC in Australia would have no ads, but everyone else on the list would. RTE and CBC are carrying ads despite being public broadcasters. And obviously you then have the commercial stations in those markets.

Does PBS in America have ads on TV?

PBS does not have ads. The closest things to an ad is when they acknowledge the sponsors during the "Viewers Like You" segment when some companies have a 30 second video saying "___________is proud to support (insert show name/PBS stations or programming)"

Not very impressed by the breaking of news that Mikaeel Kular's body had been found. I realise that resources at this time aren't as they are during the day but they managed to miss the press conference almost entirely and then the correspondent in the studio wasn't very clued up. According to him Fife is obviously in the Drylaw area of Edinburgh..

Don't forget though that it's an international simulcast so it will understandably be more difficult to break the story, the BBC World Service isn't covering it on the radio either so it's perfectly understandable - it's a breaking domestic story, where are they meant to slot it in without disrupting the fine balance between the stories they have for the respective audiences?

I assume they covered that particular story more extensively in the back half?

Well, ordinary viewers won't know, or care about that operational restriction the BBC have overnight, and
will have been slightly bemused (perhaps) by the lack of coverage.

Having said that, beyond the fact the body of a young boy has been found in Fife, anything else risks
entering the realms of wild speculation, which the media (BBC included) have past form on getting themselves into hot water over, so, on balance, just as well not much was said overnight.

I don't think there was a lack of coverage as they (eventually) announced all the facts and there was nothing more to add.

They were happy to break into coverage to join the press briefing live and as Daniela Ritordo was joined by the correspondent in the studio before they did so I presume they had knowledge that it was forthcoming. Not sure how they managed to miss it.

Reflecting now, the bigger issue for me was the correspondent who clearly had little knowledge of the situation and as a result came out with the bizarre statement that Fife is in the same area as Drylaw. BBC Scotland's Robb Flett was live in Edinburgh ten minutes later; I guess it's unfortunate they couldn't have gone straight to him.

Knowledge of UK geography doesn't seem to be terribly prevalent within BBC journos, I heard Sian Lloyd state that the Orwell Bridge was in Cambridgeshire last month. Surprised

Bbc might be better off using all regional newsreporters for domestic reports instead of having a few clueless national ones.

The rotating modesty boards around the desk in Studio E are certainly a useful feature, as they allow more guests to be accommodated during programmes such as 'Dateline London' and 'The Papers'.

However, failing to move them around to the correct positions during other programmes does give us a sneaky glimpse at the equipment behind . . . notably on this occasion (today at 16:00 TOTH) of one of the units which I think the presenters plug into for their earpieces. I think I've also seen them in Studios A, B & C .

Have I interpreted these correctly, and what other functions do they serve?

Another evening of the BBC News logo box only displaying the 'BBC' part at the TOTH. They clearly aren't any closer to solving this intermitent fault.

Surely it's more a point of them looking things up before speaking rather than having knowledge?
