Watching this mornings 0530 broadcast of The Travel Show, it seems to have been broadcast in the wrong ratio with black borders all around.

To my mind the News Channel should just be about news and the Victoria Derbyshire programme should just be on BBC2..

Though that undermines what I imagine is the essential reason for the show, which is for BBC Two to effectively subsidise the News Channel for a couple of hours... Welcome to the results of a frozen licence fee, broadcast inflation and the BBC funding rural broadband, S4C, local television and the World Service...

It is like that every week.

Isn't the BBC supposed not to show adverts, or how should I define this kind of promotion?

I believe the phrase is "undue prominence", which in my opinion this would come under. Unless anyone can explain why it isn't?

I'm curious how is this any different than having a movie star coming out and talking about their movie for ten minutes? This was a different way to get people talking about the movie while cross promoting BBC shows.

I think it's a lot different. Hard hitting they are not, but they don't tend to come across as blatant adverts for the film since they are conducted for other channels and media outlets. This video isn't using a certain actor or group of people known from TV/film - it's using characters, characters that are not owned by the BBC and are used in other advertisements, such as Sky, which is why to me this video comes across like an advertisement too. To me it's worrying that the BBC would use commercial characters in such a way, regardless of whether you find the video well-made or not.

Really? First time I've noticed - is it just on the 0530 broadcast?

It's been like that every time I've watched, at varying times of the day.

Yeah, I only noticed it after the first couple of times I watched it. Once you see it, you can't unsee it.

It's shown correctly on BBC World News unless graphics are getting chopped off?

Nothings getting chopped off, it's just shrunk a little so there are black bars all around.

Yes - whole show looks like it has been shrunk, rather than it being an up/down-conversion error. (720 v s702x576 errors can cause black bars on the left and right when up-converting SD to HD incorrectly)

Wonder if something in the show isn't quite graphics safe and so they "fixed" it by shrinking it?

I'm watching on Virgin Media, and the 1230hrs broadcast has the black bars in SD on BBC News (Ch 601), but it's all fine, and filling a 16:9 screen with no bars on BBC News HD (Ch 604).
