Peston replacement?
Interested to hear your thoughts.
For me I don't think whoever replaces him will be quite anything like him but there are plenty enough possible candidates who would do a more than competent job:
James Landale
- He was very unlucky to miss out on the BBC Political Editor job to Laura K (Even though she is equally as suitable and is doing fantastically in the role) he pretty much was the main man in the run-up to the Election and got some great exclusives such as the 'Cameron' moment. Although, he doesn't have a track record in covering finance stories, it is worth mentioning there is plenty of overlap between Politics and Economics, he certainly will be knowledgeable of the subject and has covered elements of it when analysing Budgets for instance. Kamal Armhed and Peston have shown its possible to make he transition from one of these area to the others, James is a well known, talented and authoritive journalist who could excel in a Editors role so if he fancied the move from Politics, he'd be a good choice, though his 'Today at Conference' role recently has had me wondering if he could be a potential replacement for Andrew Neil if he were to scale down anytime soon.
Hugh Pym
- A fairly obvious choice, spent plenty of time as Chief Economic Correspondent before his current role, though given he has only moved into that area so recently he may prefer to remain covering Health for the time being.
Ed Conway
He excels in the role for Sky and I would say is the next best in his field after Peston currently, I could fully see him in this role for the BBC and I think he is quite authoritive and has the required experience, could also be utilized in political coverage such as Elections too given he's played a key role in such events at Sky. Though with 'DQF' they may prefer to fill it internally.
Ben Chu
- The Independent Economics Editor, his journalism in print form is good, he seems very insightful and offers good analysis, also comes across quite well when he's on 'The Papers'.
[bDuncan Weldon][/b] From what I've seen him on Newsnight (not huge amounts) he has impressed, but given the controversy around his initial appointment it may be risky promoting him to what is probably one of the top 3 on-air editorial roles in terms of prominence across the BBC.
Telegraph Business/Economics Editors
- BBC has a track record (Kamal, Robert, Jeff Randal) of financial editors coming from this publication, so it wouldn't be a massive surprise if they were to recruit from here again
