Didn't really like the Tennant one. Far too much 'if you aren't interested in Doctor Who then go away, the whole season is based around it'. Wallace and Gromit got away with it because it was animated.
At Christmas the whole junction should fit together, they should have short stings that match the idents, then some trailers where the endboards also match the ident, and then the ident itself, as they did in the 90s. Often now its as if the trailers and the idents are designed separately with no link between the two.

I do agree with you on this point, and not just because I too am not interested in Doctor Who (I'd be saying the same thing if they singled out one of my favourite shows). However I did overall like the presentation from that year, as I said previously the news ident in particular, and the rest of the graphics used. Luckily they haven't focussed on just one programme in the past couple of years for the ident, even if they have felt a bit lacking.
When it comes to these idents, I don't mind if they go for a more simplistic and old-fashioned approach as in the last two years, because they of course did that up until the late 90s and most of those, particularly the 90s idents, are still as charming now as they were then. It's just the execution has been lacklustre. Curtains falling down, for instance!
I think the Doctor Who and Wallace and Gromit idents looked great... but they were unbearable after a week. And yet I never got tired of the 1999/2000 idents or many of the nineties ones. Possibly because they didn't feature programmes.
Also in the nostalgia trail why is the 2009 music used over Penguins? And why is the last one in black & white? That was 1980 and in colour.
Watching the montage video, the earliest one I can remember is the 2005 set, and incidentally, it's my favourite set. Ostensibly Christmassy idents, and without the naff storytelling that made the 2009 set annoying and repetitive (and I like Doctor Who).
For me, an ident featuring a gaudy, tall Christmas tree is a big plus. Other potential pluses for me include brass bands playing carol-style music, jingling bells, and an appearance of a jolly man in a red suit appropriate for North Pole weather.
For me, the ideal set would feature a Christmas tree on location at various Christmas-season programmes, featuring Father Christmas in the action - coming out of the Queen Vic inebriated and trying to mount Rudolph, getting told to feck off out of Mrs Brown's chimney, sharing a bowl of peanuts with Jim Royle, and (this year at least) him meeting up with the Nick Frost version of Santa. All of this whilst he is followed around, Ground Force style, by a brass band and a man jingling bells (out of vision, of course).
The danger of nostalgic trailers is that people will say Christmas TV isn't as good as it used to be. I loved it but thought 'The One For Christmas/Always The One For Christmas' would have been perfect.

The last few pages should probably be spun off into their own thread but agree with the comments looking back on the 1998 bauble idents - they've really stood the test of time although at the time itself a remember being largely unimpressed by them. Looking back through the years though (as it seems many others have been doing over the last couple of days) I think 2000 stands out for both BBC1 and BBC2.
A shame BBC2 doesn't get something new more often now - if both channels can't have something annually would like to perhaps see new BBC1 idents one year, new BBC2 idents the next.
