Al Jazeera doesn't get enough praise - I think it's down to a slightly racist and biased stereotype.

Although, at least in this country, it's just not that well known. It does have a good reputation, I would say, with people heavily interested in current events.

Before they launched their English speaking channel, Al Jazeera for me was always the Arabic station that would broadcast the Osama Bin Laden videos...

The trouble I have with Al Jazeera is whenever I tune in they seem to be showing pre-recorded programming - could probably do with more straight forward news really.

That also was the sentiment that was/still is shared by Americans...and those tapes gave AlJazeera English a bad reputation before even launching. Eventually, AJE proved they were a proper alternative and starting winning recognision slowly. I see AlJazeera America eventually getting there as well.

I think another part is down to the name & logo, when people hear/see it they think "that Indian news channel" or "Muslims"

I suspect this doesn't cause them undue concern, as the audience they're courting probably isn't the one that would jump to those conclusions.

Considering they've dropped the name from their sports channels I'm surprised they haven't done the same with the news channel - though I think you make a very good point sjhoward.

I don't understand how they get Indians mixed up with Muslims it's two different religions

They'd be crazy to ditch the name, Al Jazeera is a well known respected news brand. They shouldn't feel the need to change it because of what ill informed people think of it.

I assume the strategy is to save the name for news output hence it being dropped for sport and children's

An unfair reputation I always thought because they all got rebroadcast on every other channel straight away

That was an ironic post wasn't it?

Indian defines your nationality, Muslim defines your religion... There are certainly Indian Muslims, though many moved to Pakistan after partition. However there are also Indian Sikhs, Indian Christians, Indian Hindus etc.

"I don't understand how they get Brits mixed up with Catholics it's two different religions" would be an equivalent statement...

I am not being ironic I am Indian we read a different book as do the Muslims, but like all things people get converted if they don't believe in what their religions offer them but we are not the same people.
