Just spotted a job vacancy for a guest booker for the 6:30pm show...

Interesting, the duration of the job says "1 - 2 months".

They have to book 3 - 5 guests a day.

I presume this means that we'll lose the '5 News Specials' that have recently been airing instead of the 5 News at 6.30. We've seen entire bulletins focused on a single new event on big news days like the day of Baroness Thatcher's death and the day after the Oklahoma tornado.

I think these will just be moved back to the 5pm bulletin. Another question, does anyone if the new show will use the same theme tune as the main show?

I'm surprised that Channel 5 haven't been to Uncle Ofcom to ask if the 18:30 bulletin can be scrapped, maybe in exchange for a couple more update bulletins throughout the day?
This surprises me as well (assuming they haven't tried). It's not like they haven't made an effort with the format over the years with the 6:30/7pm programme. They've tried 30 minute bulletins, 15 minute bulletins, for a brief period they attempted to make it more male orientated, they tried to make it more celeb orientated, they tried Live From Studio 5 and now they're trying a discussion forum.

Ofcom can throw the public service argument around but you can't provide a public service if the public has literally no interest in watching what's available to them in a constant slot. ITN do very well at producing the programmes and C5 have at least remained faithful to a news service over the years but really in 2013 having news on Channel 5 is nothing more than having a public service programme for the sake of having a public service programme and to me it feels like a legacy of the pre-digital (or early digital any way) past. I almost wish Ofcom would realise that and allow the money to be unlocked and spent on more British produced programming in the rest of the schedule.

I agree. I think ITN would be better off focusing on the news on ITV and Channel 4. Channel 5 have done well to keep going for sixteen years but with the competition from Sky News, BBC News, ITV News and Channel 4 News, all of which have much higher audience figures, is it really worth them going on? I know that all new channels must have a dedicated news service but BBC Three ditched their main 7 O'Clock News programme because no-one watched it. I think Channel 5 would be better off with daytime summaries rather than two full news bulletins within 90 minutes of each other.

I think Channel 4 receives around the same as 5 News at 5, doesn't it?

I think John Snow said that Channel 4's audience is in the 'high 700,000/low 800,000s'. I've looked on the BARB website but it doesn't say about Channel 5.

Couldn't agree more. I think the 5pm show should be kept, and if the new show fails, it be scrapped and a longer summary at Lunch and more updates throughout the day.

Which is about the same as Five news at 5 averaged over the year. Actually across the year I think 5 might be slightly ahead.
