Apparently the letters on the TV Centre sign are going to be auctioned.


Is it only the TC1 roundels that are listed? I thought the signage on the side of TC1 was as well - or are you talking about the sign above Stage VI reception?


Surely the letters can't be listed? They only went up in 1997.

The building itself is/was only listed recently.


I thought his point was surely something added so recently couldn't be regarded as 'heritage' under the 'listing' criteria?


Exactly. Seems really odd. Imagine if the BBC had kept hold of the site and decided to change its logo.


Not really - you can still apply to change listed features. You just have to get approval for it.

TVC isn't fully closing down next week - sections of it will continue to be staffed for a while yet to handle downlink/uplink/switching etc.


Ooh that's good so the demolishing of TVC is way off into the future, thank goodness.

Its quite worrying that a lot of stuff from the past is just lying around, including photos from classic programmes just left there, I hope someone takes it and preserves it.

Considering the size of TVC, I imagine there'll be loads of abandoned classic memorabilia and random stuff just left
lying around all over the place. Here's hoping a team of people are sent in before all the redevelopment work starts
to collect as much of it as they can. There'll be plenty of stuff that could potentially be auctioned off for charity.

See, now there's an idea ... an official BBC Television Centre Memorabilia Auction for Children In Need 2013.


(This is assuming most of it hasn't already been scavenged for keepsakes and/or to be dumped on eBay!)

Work will be a long way from starting anyway, at least demolition. According to their website work is due to start in 2015 and the planning applications for most of the site won't be submitted until next month (the one for Stages 4,5,6 apparently was done in January). I'd have thought there's a lot of equipment that will need taking out and either auctioning, storing or redistributing elsewhere in the BBC.

I doubt much was ever left 'lying about' in studios to start off with, and since the closure was announced. the departing staff have been quite efficient in removing everything that wasn't nailed down, by the sound of it. Wink (and plenty that was!)

I'd be surprised if Stanhope found even floor tiles in place when they start stripping the building for redevelopment. Laughing

Even the gents and ladies loo signs have gone in many areas. Most of the room number and internal signage has also been pilfered.

Very sad. Moving forward is always important, but I do feel that the BBC have made a mistake in leaving this icon of British Television behind them.

It's an absolute travesty, but even I'm surprised at the strong public feeling against closing TVC.

Oh - when did they stop using a secondary site for some of the d-t-h uplinks? I was under the impression that some transponders were uplinked off-site these days.

Arqiva used to do one of the muxes, but that one was closed. There is a reserve uplink, in another location.
