I agree. Most companies that own multichannels eventually work out that they sell better if they have their own unique identities. Not just the obvious UKTV, but remember how uniform Granada Sky Broadcasting's channels were before they settled into their own personalities.
Maybe ITV Plc will eventually buy out UTV and we'll have Talksport TV...
However they can have personalities through numbers - ITV2 for instance, people know pretty much what they're gonna get from that - I'd say it's pretty clear. BBC's digital channels are currently numbered after being names before, no?
The BBC has a long history of numbering its services, and the main reason for rebranding Choice to Three was highly political in order to get funding. Also, when I referred to the channels selling better, I meant to advertisers, and obviously the BBC doesnt have that concern.
ITV2 current has quite a distinct image but this is largely due to a small range of programming (TOWIE, Celeb Juice, Xtra Factor, Peter Andre) all of which are showing signs of growing tired and we shouldnt mistake the programming's popularity for the popularity of the channel's brand.

I think removing the '1' is a good thing, hopefully ITV will break away from the numbering system in a few years and reorganise all of the channels, with 4 being solely for Sportand being called then 'ITV Sport Channel', 3 taking all of 4's other programming, 2 staying as the 'lighter' style that it is and itv(1) staying as the main network

I'd argue because the channels are split mainly by audience demographics rather than genre as much of the name suggestions seem to be (not accounting for a fair bit of range on each channels) - that makes it easier to sell to advertisers? You want to reach young people, alright, buy on ITV2 - if you want men between 25-44, ITV4. Keeping the names more generic allows a range of programming rather than only, as one suggestion a few posts ago would be, ITV would have to ditch some sitcoms, films, repeats of popular ITV shows... because they're not reality shows.

These programmes may not be to everyone's taste, but credit where it's due. ITV2 is the biggest digital channel out there in terms of audience ratings and share, and that's been the case for quite some time now.

"The Channel you are watching now has a new name "itv"
loving the logo on the black sign as Linda Barker would say "I think it works really really well". I'm kind of 50/50 on the dropping of the 1 I have got use to calling it itv1 now but we shall see how it goes.
Just found this, has it really been 12 years?

Thanks for the answer to my earlier question about ITV1 idents. They did have a variant of the River / Boat ident with Santa in for Christmas 2011 though. Do you seriously mean they no longer use River / Boat on a regular basis?
As for ITV2 idents, I've managed to collect the following on video recently:
City and Country
Dancing Feet
Swimming Pool
Nail Polish
I haven't yet got the following:
Couple
Neon City
Do ITV2 still use those? Would ITV2 just use Couple late at night? I'll record some small hours of the morning programme starts on ITV2 tonight and see what I get.

ITV2 haven't used Neon City ident for quite a long time now. I suspect its because it has programme titles in the ident which are no longer shown on the channel (Supernatural etc)
Not sure why Couple hasn't been used for a while. I know it used to be shown before Vampire Diaries, but the last few episodes of VD just used City and Country most times.

Thanks for the info about the Neon City and Couple idents on ITV2.
For your information, I looked at the ITV2 2008 idents page of The Ident Gallery to find the list of ITV2 idents and assumed that as the current range of ITV2 idents.
Interestingly although The Ident Gallery lists current idents for ITV1, ITV2, ITV3 and ITV4, there's no mention of CITV. Today I recorded one ident off the CITV channel, the ident I managed to get featured a mouse trap. Does the CITV channel have other idents and other pres? Where can I see a list of their current pres? I'd like to record some of their pres tomorrow while I have the chance.

But my point is, very little of that is due to the brand, so it's still pretty disposable.

Someone on another forum has said that the new look ITV News will have a 90s ITN look, something like this then?
