Breaks aren't that uncommon in other territories, are they? In Australia, they go on a Summer break at Christmas, for about a month.

None of the standard news programs in Australia go on summer break, but some current affair shows do

I thought things like Sunrise all went on a Summer break, or is it just presenters?

Just the presenters.

I've noticed over these number of days that the closing theme of the RTE News bulletins have changed somewhat.

Would this be for this month only or is this move a permanent arrangement?

There was word early this year; that there would be a new studio for RTE News planned sometime in the future. Could this be true or could it be that RTE News could be rebranded when Ed Mulhall comes in September?

Id say everything will remain the same (as it has presentation wise for the last 20 years) until Kevin Backhurst comes in to take the helm in September. I think he'll most definitely change things and put his own stamp on things.

I just heard tonight (24th August) that the current Chief News Correspondent; Charlie Bird is set to leave RTE within three weeks. The 62 year old is likely to make his last radio broadcast as a fill-in presenter on The Marian Finucane Show this weekend.

He said he wants to pursue other work projects. So, he is only retiring from RTE. He will still his work as a journalist.

His first major story on RTE had happened in the Phillippines of the imprisoned Irish priest, Fr Niall O'Brien.

The major financial and political story was covered with Former Economics Editor George Lee, about the scandal involving former Fianna Fail TD Beverley Cooper Flynn and National Irish Bank about manipulating the life assurance products at the bank.

Retired yesterday apparently, his last broadcast being filling in for Marian Finucane on her Sunday lunchtime show. Never really recovered from his stint in Washington really. I can't see him doing much to be honest, apart from maybe the odd freelance job such as filling in on Vincent Browne's late night show on TV3. Ursula Halligan basically does at TV3 the job he used to do at RTÉ.

I see that the RTE News at 1 O'Clock & 6.1 bulletins are back to their normal schedule since yesterday.

RTÉ's London correspondent Brian O'Connell has announced he is leaving the broadcaster when its bureau shuts next week.

Colleagues have already paid personal tributes in reply to his Tweet.

A truly great reporter and correspondent. He must have been the London Editor for 25 years. I though Mr. Backhurst may have reversed this decision when he arrived but its seems he will be too late taking his post to affect change.

Im sure Brian will thrive in the future and could see him as a senior correspondent for the likes of Sky, BBC or ITV.

I will miss Brian O'Connell so much as London Editor, he will still be a fantastic and detailed journalist when he leaves RTE.

According to the Irish Times; David-Davin Power has said he was a gentleman and great correspondent. He said it was a great shame to have found Brian in this position.

Five other people were offered redundancy or relocate back to the RTE HQ in Dublin.

If Mr Backhurst isn't reversing the London closure I wonder if perhaps, through his connections with the BBC, we'll see a closer working relationship between BBC and RTÉ in covering major British events of interest,
we may start to hear Dobbo say things like 'for more on this we are joined by the BBC Political editor Nick Robinson' etc.

Can someone tell me why the barco screen in the RTE News studio on the right hand side of the presenters is looking frozen?

You would see them going to the screens on their left hand side while talking to correspondents rather than doing it on their right hand side. I seen Eileen Dunne do this when talking to the Washington Correspondent; Richard Downes about the story of the US Embassy in Benghazi.

I think the same thing happened when she was talking to Ray Kennedy while asking questions on the LRC with the Hospital Consultants from the HSE.

Is this just an technical error or has Kevin Bakhurst indicated even further that he is changing the studio in the future?

I think that screen may just be out of action. When the sports news on 6.1 is being presented from there it just seems to be covered by a temp structure with a generic newsroom background.
