I find it a shame they don't do a real breakfast show, not one when all the kids are at school etc. It will be interesting to see what happens when the show goes to break on RTE 1, will News Now keep it live or go to promos etc.

What will happen to all the drama/dr phil etc. Will that move to RTE 2. Makes sense as everyone has RTE Jr now, they could push the RTE Jr repeats to that channel freeing up RTE 2?

The first big on screen change in RTÉ News and Current Affairs of the Bakhurst era is that the Frontline has been axed as a separate show, though the studio debates will continue albeit on a Tuesday night and under the Prime Time banner. The format will effectively swap slots with the present Tuesday edition of Prime Time which moves to Monday.

There'll be a new set large enough to run both formats in the new year, with a new look to the show.

Pat Kenny has now officially joined the Prime Time team, effectively bringing him back full circle to his earlier life in current affairs (he was a presenter of Prime Time's predecessor Today Tonight in the 1980s). Richard Crowley is leaving the show and going back to radio where he'll host This Week and the Friday edition of News at One.

Vivienne Traynor reading the 6.1 news tonight. She is legal affairs correspondent with RTÉ. Interestingly she was presenting alongside her husband Justin Treacy who was reading the sports news.

Kate Egan's been doing quite a lot of newsreading recently as well, including a few weekday Six One's. Perhaps trying out some new blood.

Aengus Mac Grianna, bit of a faux pas, from what looks like the Nine News from last night:

That is so painful to watch. Because Aengus Mac Grianna is such a terrible newsreader, anyone who works with him would be aware that he'd handle something like this as badly as he did. As such, this doesn't appear to be an innocent prank, but rather something done with malicious intent. Of course, this is quite heavy speculation on my part.

All he did was start reading into the next insert in his autocue. I wouldn't read into it so deeply. However, I do agree you'd think that after 15 or so years newsreading he would be better. He constantly shuffling with his script when reading the autocue. I think John Finnnerty is a much more assured newsreader.

He was about to say the word enterprise, and "its commander" was most certainly not the last thing in that particular story's script. He just abandoned the rest on his second attempt. I still think someone screwed him over.

And the first word of the proceeding story was Enterprising...

Ah. Well that does change things, admittedly.

And Ray Kennedy has been doing the News on Two for the last few weeks, though he did do some news reading when he was with Sky News.
