BBC South East failed to opt at 6.30 and carried on showing BBC News, getting about a minute or so into Sportsday before suddenly cutting to SET. Good start when Rob Smith had been posting on Facebook saying welcome to new viewers joining us this evening etc.

Analogue BBC 1 in the Brighton area, is still carrying South Today, so there's potential for confusion there !

Of course, come March 21st BBC 1 analogue (along with ITV/4/5) will be finally switched off for good.

11 members of staff of sick at Meridian today, this reflected in the presenting line-up. On the lunchtime bulletin Martin Dowse gave of the impression it was just him on the sofa by saying "join me at six for Meridian Tonight", Stacey Poole was down to present but obviously she couldn't. Kerry Swain was drafted in for Meridian Tonight and Sarah Gomme being ill resulted in Chris Maughan being drafted in for the sport. Nia Mason is presenting the late news.

I think they need to up the paracetamol in Whiteley!

Appalling time keeping by Meridian yesterday evening, not only did they feature a story about cooling towers I3n Kent being demolished on Sunday but they did another story on it on Monday. Then at the end of the program Martin and Sangeeta signed, said goodnight and thanks for watching and they played out the cooling towers again.

Obviously the clips of the cooling towers weren't long enough and as a result it had to cut back to the studio with about 45 seconds to spare for the presenters and met man Martin Davies to babble on about how they loved the pictures. Sangeeta and Martin then signed of again.

Obviously that link is now the previous day's programme but yes, I remember seeing that and thinking they must have underrun or something. Also, I know it's good to occasionally have a cheery presenter but Sangeeta is just awful at filling time and small talk, sometimes I don't think she even knows what she's talking about!

"A warm welcome to viewers from London, I don't know what that's all about" said Fred within moments of the switch so well done to Meridian I say (always bugs when people don't acknowledge what's going on). Easy to tell which region had the prerecorded top half tonight.

I don't like criticising people, but I have to say Sangeeta is still terrible. Really, really poor. Can hardly read a sentence without fluffing it.

The camera positioning is awful on the Meridian Tonight set, they are obviously trying to give the impression the studio is bigger than it actually is, however making the desk look huge in each frame makes the presenters look little.

You should see it when they have the presenters standing up in front of the set for 'special' occasions! The whole studio set up is rubbish to be honest, sometimes the air-con fails too and you can almost see the Cuprinol dripping off Fred's forehead!

Cost cutting eh? Where will it end...

I know exactly what you mean. Meridian has more news because it has to cover a region the same as 2 and a bit BBC Regions (South, South East and Oxford), but South Today has more local news from a regional perspective. They can also interrupt with Breaking News as they have done one some of the past few occasions.

Interesting to see what the decision to award Meridian the title was based on.
