The voice you were hearing was indeed the voice of Ri Chun-hee. She deliberately delivers state propaganda like a man because a deep voice commands greater authority. Chun-hee appeared sporadically on the live feed last night looking solemn and mournful. All a facade of course; her background is in performing arts and not journalism.

Was she presenting on location or in a green screen studio? Stood up or behind a desk?

Was she rota'd in to do it?

It's unusual for Ri Chun-hee to present on a Thursday. Maybe they're trying her out for something?

Ri Chun-hee... amazing, I didn't know there was so much of a biography about this woman. She fascinates me! Utterly compelling presenting skills.

I noticed reading her Wikipedia page that because of her fame she has quite unrestricted access to Western goods, which I thought was interesting.

Yes, I find her very interesting indeed, would be interesting to know what kind of lifestyle someone like her leads compered to average North Korean.

She announced the death or Kim Il-sung in 1994* so she's clearly the top brass in Korean television news (if it can be called that) broadcasting.

I'd love for North Korea to one day turn it's back on communism and to be unified with South Korea, but I fail to see how Ri Chun-hee would work for viewers in the south of the peninsula.

EDIT* Thanks to WW Update below for the correction regarding the year.

1994. Here is a side-by-side comparison of her announcement then and now:

I've been watching some of the clips of NK news bulletins on You Tube and it's fascinating to say the least. The epic opening, over dramatic, almost scary presentation tone. Shocked Surprised

Thanks for the info on Ri Chun-hee, leading lady of NK news it seems.

Mrs Ri presents propaganda in front of paintings of hills. She is known throughout the country as The People's Broadcaster. It remains a mystery as to whether a North Korean singer called El Ton-jon is on standby to pen a tribute song when she dies. One suspects not.

I'm liking these North Korean news presenters... very authoritative... shouting, but its okay... Tim Willcox would fit right in.

If this was Twitter, I would re-tweet that post. It's so true, SRS!
