Wider shot of the studio at the start of the evening programme.
It does seem that they don't have space for a desk - but I can see Breakfast settling in there quite nicely.
I see for the background they have gone down the same route as Plymouth, and have a virtual newsroom with a local view out of the window, rather than the usual virtual BBC newsroom used in TC7/ N6.

Is that it, or is their another part with just a desk? It's going to be weird having the news presented from a sofa after so many years of desk if that is the case.
Very nicely lit - I can see Breakfast in there already!

Things I like:
- The new titles. Nice adaptation of the 2008 version.
- How good the set looks
- The fact they have a platform in this set - the last Oxford Road set made the desk look like it was just in the middle of nowhere.
Things I don't like:
- The fact there's no desk. I've always preferred the serious stuff from the desk and would have preferred them to go for a desk over a sofa if there's only room for one or the other. Plus, the fact there's only room for one or the other suggests to me having a smaller studio is a backward step (but I always thought this would happen).
- They've used that God-awful music. They should have just stuck with the 2008.
- No Gordon!
All of this I'm going off the caps on here though. Not managed to catch the programme itself. It also amuses me that due to height difference Ranvir is on the platform!

It does look rather nice - not a very adventurous design though. I presume the background panels are like BBC London and are actually large plasmas? If so have they been using them for graphics/lives in the program yet? If not, I'm sure they soon will.
Seems a bit basic for a national news programme too when Breakfast comes along, but I will reserve judgement till they are there and the studio is dressed differently.

It seems that there is more space to the studio after all, as shown here with the weather reporter's position:

And another wide shot from a different angle:

. . . and a nice shot of the outside of MediaCity to end the programme.

I quite like the music and BBC NW have always seemed to want to move away from what the other regions have.
Set, well yes it would have been nice to have had a desk but what we have now is quite a nice combination of desk and sofa. The view from the main studio is nice although I'm struggling to make things out. You can definitely make out the Imperial war museum but then to the left of the studio it looks a bit like Central Manchester which, geographically shouldn't be in that position. As I mentioned before, the ' NW Breakfast update' studio has a nice view which is clearer and has Salford Quays/Central Manchester/Beetham Tower view in relation to how it should be geograpically.
All in all view, a great studio and set, I like the music and the North West surely has the best regional news programme and set in England.
Funnily enough though, we had a similar awkward silence between the 4 presenters at the end in the same way there was on the first day of the 2007 relaunch!

Weekend breakfast will be weird from a sofa as well. Perhaps they have a desk, and it could be moved in place of the sofa when needed? I hope that is the case for sake of flexibility when they need it for other programmes. I really do love the new set though. I like the more moody, darker lighting as well. Breakfast will fit in very well in that environment.
Thanks Stuart for the caps.

Love the new set. At long last, a regional news set that doesn't require or desk or a trendy one chair set up.
Clearly it's been designed with Breakfast in mind, so they can easily adapt it for them.
However, my fear is the 'broom cupboard' will be in use for all the other bulletins, while the new studio only for the 6.30.

But weekend breakfast should be/is more relaxed than it's weekday counterpart. Under normal circumstances that would be an excuse to use a sofa.

Would it be too technical to assume that desk has various height settings and all they need to do is move the sofa and bring in chairs?

Is it just because they are restricted to studios that they are obliged to use a sofa. It would make Breakfast more consistent that way by using the same studio 7 days a week in Salford.
Can't wait for them to start doing tours in Media City. I'd love to look around the whole building. I'm very impressed by their studios and output so far.
