Sanna, IMO does have the best song, although I'll wait until we have the second chance results.

Yep - not sure the staging will do her many favours at Eurovision though. The turntable works well (walking constantly in the verse and spinning in the chorus) but the vertical cage elements far less so. No scale and just a bit odd. Suspect they'll re-think if she wins.

Though Melodifestivalen is far more about promoting artists in Sweden than actually chosing a song for Eurovision... (Look how well Dilba's track did after the first heat for instance - and it came last in the voting didn't it?)

Melodifestivalen's Andra Chansen tonight has to have been the most frustrating 90 minutes of my life. The best AC line up ever and the Swedish public made some of the most horrifying and baffling decisions ever.

Love Generation winning over Jenny Silver - I could understand that though I would have preferred it the other way.

The Moniker winning over Linda P - Same as above.

Pernilla winning over Shirley's Angels - Are you serious?

Sara Varga winning over Loreen - WHAT?!

And then, just to top it all off, Sara won over Love Generation! How on earth did that occur?! She was appalling! Genuine dross! At least the Moniker was entertaining and got through.

But anyway, turns out there's some phone number scandal:

http://www.expressen.se/noje/melodifestivalen2011/1.2354818/svt-s-rostningsmiss-i-andra-chansen

And that happened during all four of the first duels. And there were less than 1000 votes between Jenny and Love Generation! So what will happen next? Sadly I think the only likely option is that SVT will just refund the televotes and say no more about it.

A truly ghastly Melfest final this year IMO. I only really like Danny, Eric and Sanna (who must win).

SVT are wriggling trying to persuade people that the phone number switch didn't affect the result.

Total Schlager catastrophe - Jenny, Linda and Shirley all knocked out.

However I can see how Sara Varga and The Moniker got through - they're both much more distinctive. Swedish language songs will always do well - and Sara's delivery and style will appeal to a very distinct audience.

I'm very sad that Jenny and Shirley aren't going to Globen, and Loreen did an amazing job as usual, but I can see why the result is as it was - and as a viewer it went as I predicted... (Maybe I'm going a bit native - it's the first year that I've been really able to watch and understand pretty much everything... The joys of Swedex lessons.)

There wasn't any SMS voting in Andra Chansen tonight...

*** EDIT : Just watched it back. The phone numbers for the Radiohjälpen number (the more expensive of the two ways of voting) were swapped on the graphics used on the VT reprise after Jenny Silver and Love Generation had performed (Jenny should have been 01 and Love Generation 02 - but they were reversed on the graphic) The graphics on the original performances, and for the cheaper non-Radiohjälpen numbers, and on the graphics after the VT reprise were correct. That also matches the Swedish version of the article posted. ***

During Melodifestivalen you have a choice to vote AND donate to Radiohjälpen (kind of like Comic Relief/Children In Need) or just to vote. There are SMS and Phone numbers for both the dearer and cheaper ways to vote - but Andra Chansen can't use SMS voting as the voting is over too short a period.

I'm pretty certain that in the UK that would definitely mean that an alternative selection procedure would have to be used as all UK (well all BBC) shows that use phone votes have to have a backup selection system should the phone vote fail, be otherwise invalid, or be too close to decide.

Ahh - I was wondering what the two phone numbers were for - I assumed it was for something like voting from a friendly neighbouring country where SVT is available, but couldn't believe it could be that!!! Thanks for the explanation...

Yep - two phone numbers and two SMS numbers (apart from Andra Chansen) - one votes AND donates, the other just votes.

I think they have 500,000+ votes tonight in Andra Chansen and 1,500,000+ SEK donated to Radiohjälpen - though I didn't rewind to double check.

That's interesting re the BBC noggin - you learn something new every day. I wonder would Jonathan Bullen get the gig?

Hmm - suspect Nikki Parsons would be higher up the list.

Jonathan Bullen's music direction polarises people in the industry...

And yes, I meant to say Stockholm, not Oslo as the turning point. It really upped the stakes. Kattis and Anders were supremely confident, professional and delightfully irreverent too. A very sophsticated show.

Stockholm was a step-up on so many levels. IMHO only Oslo last year has come close.

Suspect it is something to do with the hosts. The three Norwegian hosts were great. I wonder if the fact that most Swedes and Norwegians speak near-perfect English means that presenting in English is more natural for presenters in those countries - and also that our senses of humour are closer.

Watching Oslo back - they have a similar sense of fun and ironic delivery to Katis and Anders 10 years earlier in Stockholm.

Watching the opening number of the Norwegian MelodiGrandPrix this year kind of confirms this. They Norwegians can take the contest seriously without taking themselves too seriously. Alexander Rybak and Didrik Solli Tangen did a good job - and I just love Nadia Hasnaoui.

I agree - I thought the three hosts worked very well indeed - and I thought it was by far the most professionally presented Eurovision in a long time. Quite conservative in places, but fully in the spirit of the whole thing. The opening of Stockholm 2000 still gives me goosebumps though - just brilliant. If you haven't seen it:

Yep - Stockholm's opening sequence is brilliant. Watching it now I keep going "Oh I've been there... and there... and there..." Globen is a great venue - and the contrast with the small venue in Jerusalem the year before was huge.

I loved the presenters in Stockholm, and the presenters in Oslo were the first in the last 10 years who have been anywhere near as good I think.

Anders Lundin - who was one of the presenters in Stockholm in 2000 - has just announced he's not presenting the next season of "Allsang på Skansen" (a very popular Swedish summertime open-air music show) - and Måns Zelmerlöw is taking over. If Sweden wins Eurovision in the next few years I wouldn't bet against Måns presenting. He presented MF last year, and did a great job.

I also thought that Oslo's set and inter-act transitions (very well executed motion-tracked virtual maps and screens) were a real evolution, in fact probably a revolution. No LED video - but a very versatile and flexible set with lots of different physical and lighting elements.

Also - with regards to Melodifestivalen, although I like the new graphic design they're using this year, I don't think the presentation and production have been quite as good as last year.

Andra Chansen last year had an amazing opening sequence, and the Dolph Lundgren sequences worked a lot better for me than the Peter Stormare stuff, and Christine Meltzer's stuff was pretty funny last year.

The interval performances this year have been interesting - and hearing Danse i Neon in English has been a highlight - but in comparison to last year it all seems a bit lower key.

On the other hand - there have been better songs this year - so I shouldn't complain!

In fact maybe I'm being a bit harsh - the SÄPO-style postcards in between (and little skits they've dropped in after the Direkt till Globen acts have been chosen) have been pretty good - though were totally absent this evening during Andra Chansen?
