Interesting!

Here's a clip of another station using Classical Gas as a news theme -- with the Telesound version of the percussion section at the beginning and a long cut of the original instrumental at around 5:30:

Does anyone remember The Karelia suite (intermezzo from) by Sibelius being used as a theme for ITV's weekly news programme "This Week"? (not the current BBC programme of the same name)

The part used as the theme is from about 1:20 onwards.

No, you haven't made it up, the percussion stab you mention is part of classical gas (about two thirds way through the track) and was included as part of the end theme.

Classical Gas, this is a live version but still includes the percussion stab.

Damn, you're good. I've had Classical Gas on CD for years and never noticed that!

Here is an interesting one I found.

It is the Awakening by Johnny Pearson, the music from which a part is used as the theme to News at ten, the recognizable part that was used is from about half way through the video.

Interesting - never heard that version before. I don't believe it features in the K.P.M. music library in that form.

A bit of Googling reveals The Awakening is actually part of a longer work called '20th Century Portrait' by Johnny Pearson, written a few years before it was chosen for News At Ten. I don't know if this has ever been released commercially - I certainly can't find it available anywhere.

Does anyone have any more information on 20th Century Portrait, or know if it's available anywhere?

I think it was a library release only, back in the days when library music was released on good old vinyl records. I think 20th Century Portrait was one whole side of a record back then.

20th Century Portrait is available for download from filestube.com, but you must sign up with them first, I am not signed up so I don't know how reliable they are.

Thanks to a wonderfully kind gentleman and also having an extremely clever and technically minded nephew, I have now just gained some excellent ring-tone and message alert-tones on my faithful old Nokiar (I am not a Technophobe like some of you chaps on here...................)

In any case - thanks to the aforesaid kind gentlemen - my Nokiar now plays "The World Today from BBC World Headline Vamp - 1998" as my normal ring-tone. And for sms (that's "short message somethingorother" for those of you who are not quite as advanced as me) alert tone, I now have "BBC World - 1 second ident".

And it's really caught-on in the office, with everyone twitching knowingly when my phone rings, without quite being able to "name that tune", so to speak.

So, come one then. Who else has a "newsy" ring-tone? (And don't all pretend that I'm the only anorak here on TVF Newsroom..................I know some of you have it..................)

BTW, I love this orchestral theme used for a short-lived but critically acclaimed series from ABC News and composed by well-known TV composer Bill Conti:
