I guess Gemma was down for the main weather presenter. I wonder though who is going to be a coover presenter? Or will it just be a presenter from ITV London.

I'm just watching the new Meridian Tonight in Swindon, and it's quite a strange experience.

They seem to be playing down the geography of their stories. The top story tonight was basically a (slightly) localised version of the national unemployment story. It started promisingly, with a run-down of the stats for the local cities, with Swindon getting a mention - but after that there was a succession of clips of people in unspecified locations that could be anywhere in the country.

Ironically, one of the few local mentions in this report was the 'silver lining' that, despite job losses, Gatwick Airport is recruiting. Great - it's only a 2 and a half-hour drive away.

Then there was a piece on a girl who's had two strokes, which didn't even mention where she's from.

The problem they seem to be facing is that, the bigger the area you cover, the harder it is to find stories big enough to be of interest to everyone. And, in this case, the region's so huge that it's virtually impossible. So, instead, they'll end up just covering nationwide stories from a vaguely local perspective - which isn't really local journalism at all.

The nastiness aimed at her is not justified.

Watched on Monday and she seemed competent enough for local TV. All this childish rubbish that Fred hates her, everybody hates her is nonsense. I understand she is quite popular with her co workers, and yes even Fred.

If Mr. dinage looks pee'd off if may be more to do with the doubling of his effective workload hosting two shows instead of one.

I am surprised at the level of defamation allowed on this forum. Dont like her performance? thats a valid opinion; but avoid unjustified and untrue comments about someone who is a real person - unless you would say it to her face.

Quite, its pretty clear to see that they do get on. Obviously when compared to Fred and Debbie there is a stark contrast, but those two were friends for years.

Interesting to see so many South East viewers on the blog describe Fred as wooden!?

What does anyone think about Gemma's new venture especially in these credit crunch times ? I wonder why no mention of her leaving ? ITV policy ie she was told to keep quiet ?
