Tv ark: Relaunch and beyond

I personally think Flash Video would be an excellent choice. For example, if the newer Flash 8 codec, you can get some high quallity results from a lower bitrate. Also, due to the commecial nature of the codec, there is not a single application out there that can convert it back to any other format. And as said, it's harder to nick, because if someone wanted to nick it, they would have to decompile the swf, then make sense of the actionscript. It also means the user doesn't need additional software, it's all in the browser.

There is also the problem that the uptake of RealPlayer is dropping. Back in the day it was great as we could get more out of less with it on dial-up connections. Now, they've made the software overly 'chunky' and slow, putting many people, including myself, off from downloading clips in Real format. Also, it is being superceeded by newer codecs, which in the broadband day and age, can deliver superior results.

Call me insane, but couldn't all of the videos just be hosted on Youtube itself, saving on the massive bandwidth costs? Everyone wins that way, surely?

He was most sheepish and full of injured innocence when I sent him a "take them down or else" e-mail; sounds like I shall have to have a word with him again.

The issue then is why bother having a website around it? The majority of people will find the stuff on youtube and use that accounts channel to view other videos.

We would then lose the excellent commentaries that TV Room and TV Ark provide alongside the clips.

Also the risk of it all being uploaded to youtube/tvark is that when google are finally forced to do something about copyright infringement they'd just delete the entire account. everything ruined.

If flash video was to be used it would be best to be their own local version of flash video. It not only gives them more control but allows them more security over files.

There are tons of ways to convert flv (the video part of flash) to anything... How do you think people save clips from youtube so easily. Aside from that to be honest I really don't care if TheTVRoom or TVArk go down the pan, in trying to reinvent themselves they've both just failed miserably. Loads of clips I used to look at there and often try to find again today are seemingly always offline. I also don't care if anyone takes everything from TVArk and puts it on youtube, on the contrary I think its a good thing. It means more people can see and access them. TV Ark does not own the clips and I find their stupid copyright crap annoying, all they've done is captured it, big whoop, anyone with a TV card can do that. I'd be glad as its using less of your bandwidth if clips are hosted in more than one place.

There was a time when if I wanted to find an ident from any channel and from any period there were tons of sites I could find it on, now there are none. Ark and Room are both totally pointless now imo.

However, it takes a long time to encode the clips, write the annotations and format the annotations to fit the web site's style.

Technically TV Ark do own part of the clip - the sting and countdown before the clip starts, and on some clips the DOG in the corner.

They don't work with flv's encoded in Flash 8's On6 codec however. Try it yourself, it's always failed for me.

What a disgraceful and ungrateful attitude. If it wasn't for sites like Sean Hughes TV Logos site, The TV Room, TV Ark my own and many others that have come and gone over the years, your interest in presentation (and potentially the development of the entire hobby) probably would not have materialised.

Videos on sharing sites like YouTube often offer a lower production value than those presented on pres sites (a bit similar to how FACT often say how pirate DVD's offer poor production values).

While pres sites often take the time to research information and facts & copyright issues and offer a video where all the frames are captures and the audio isn't out of sync, all too often I find YouTube videos where the audio is all over the place, and the video is jerky...and not even to begin on the legality of the files hosted on their site...

In this day in age none of our pres sites offer that low standard of quality and it is a testamant to the developments that pres sites have offered over the years to develop video over the Internet to the standards expected by viewers today.

There is a lot to be said for your ignorance.

Now now TV Archive, clearly poor little Bail is a terrible victim here, so try not to be too angry at him. He hasn't been provided with his constant media clip fix whenever he wants it, and as not everyone has quite grasped saving files yet, all us webmasters should be *ashamed* for forcing him to suffer needlessly from such a terrible loss. We should help and support these victims, not ridicule them, offering them great counselling, and a luxury apartment, complete with DVD copies of every clip from every site in existance on an instant voice activated DVD player, just so that they never have to miss a minute.

You guys should use the Type of Flash used in Idents.tv, and then have downloadable clips if you wanted them, like idents.tv

It's more the context provided by the sites that makes them better than You Tube. However the commentary itself, especially on TV Ark, often leaves a lot to be desired in parts



That is the other disadvantage with using YouTube. I could see everything suddenly disappearing suddenly.

Personally I can't see what's wrong with the current system. Whatever format they are in someone will be able to nick them if they so wish. Havign TVARK logos on each clip won't stop that happening, but it does mean thatthey can't be palmed off by the Aiden Lunn's of the world
