ITV News

A new look for 2006 (December 2005)

Mr Q
As has been discussed elsewhere, ITV News will be getting a brand new look in the new year. So, I've decided to express some of my own ideas of how ITV should take things...

Titles
This is the generic ITV News logo. All title sequences will be relatively short, as the various pieces of the logo fly in, spinning around the Y-axis before assembling off to the left of centre. This would be laid over a live shot of Big Ben - preferably the camera shot would move as well, sweeping up to the clock face which would be positioned to the right of centre.

Programme titles would be incorporated into the logo as appropriate - ITV Early News, ITV Lunchtime News, ITV Evening News, ITV Nightly News (shown below). There would also be a version for "ITV Breaking News" - although instead of the camera shot being of Big Ben, it might be of a relevant live picture to the story, or a wide shot of the studio.

For ITV News specials or Special Reports, a computer generated version of the Big Ben clock face would be used as the background - this same image would be used as the background for full screen graphics (as we'll see later).

Top Stories/Coming Up
The orange block would spin around the X-axis with headline captions as the images in the central frame change.

Astons
The background block expands across from left to right as the text types on.

Heading straps slide up from beneath the blue block.

During Breaking News, the DOG expands to reveal the "ITV Breaking News" logo. Aston backgrounds change to orange.

In the Regions
As part of the new ITV News look, a greater effort will be made to strengthen the ITV News brand in the regions. Rather than localised DOGs, graphics would continue to display the "ITV News" logo in the regions. Programme titles would first see the ITV News logo form (in the same fashion as described above for the national titles), before then breaking up and flipping around the X-axis as the programme name types on. Rather than a live shot of Big Ben, the regions would use skyline shots from their own region - these may not necessarily be live, given cost factors.

ITV Wales News would take a variation of the ITV News logo rather than the regional programme name box.

The background to full screen graphics would attempt to tie in with the design of the regional news studios.

Thoughts and comments are of course welcome. Smile

Very nice indeed. 10/10

Super. Only thing I would change is the orange on the "news" part of the logo; when scaled down it's not defined enough.

I like it. it reminds me of ITV news last decade - the Big Ben face - is it yours?

Really good but just one thing....

Are these for the ITV NC or just the news on ITV1 because the news channel is closing on FrI 23rd dec 05.

God, everyone is aware by now that the NC is closing; anyway, the majority of his mocks are clearly defined by, for example, 'London Tonight' and 'Nightly News'...

The one thing I would change is the colours, to reflect the time of day - perhaps a slightly darker orange/red for the Nightly News? Otherwise very, very impressive.

Well done.

Thanks for the comments so far. Having been aware of the closure of the news channel, none of the graphics are made with a rolling news service in mind - hence, no ticker or clock in particular.

No, no... I think it's actually a photo off Wikipedia. I just changed the colours a bit.

Are you planning to update/refresh these with our suggestions in mind?

If so my little suggestion is to intensify the orange in the logo for the "news" text so that it doesn't lose emphasis when scaled.

I'll definitely give it some thought.

Very nice so far. It will be nice to see how you are going to develop them further in view of the comments made. Can't wait. Very Happy

I like these - certainly one of the best sets of ITV News mocks posted amongst the current crop.

I think the logo works well - it ties in with the generic ITV branding but is unique to ITV News - like the current logo in fact.

I also like the way it's adapted for the regions - it's in no way identical, but they are obviously linked.

My only critisism would be the live shots of Big Ben for the titles - I just think it comes across as a bit lazy. However, I'm sure the concept could be used very well as part of a filmed set of titles (rather than animated graphics) - and I think the logo design and it's position means it would work well on screen with wide studio shots.

I like the in-vision window - especially the added touch with the Big Ben clockface. Be great if this could be incorporated into the studio floor / desk (something I think they did with the ITV News at Nine during the Iraq War).

It's a thumbs up from me - I'd just like to see something a bit more imaginative for the titles as I think in this case "simple" would come across as "lazy".
