Things I hate (non exhustive)

Cut away shots during a piece to camera, from a different camera, but the presenter carries on looking at the original camera.

The unseen off camera person Ben Fogle talks to on his documentaries. (It's the technique, not the person I hate, just to be clear!)

Archive footage (even stuff only a few days old) being degraded to make it look b/w and/or low colour and/or noise added and/or like the Baird 30 line system

Shallow Depth of Field lenses used for news and factual material, (and sometimes with the above effects added)

Journalists interviewing each other, almost relegating the viewer to some sort of eavesdropper.

Streaming services that start up the next episode before you've even had a chance to find the remote and cancel the action (Here's looking at you Amazon)


We could be twins! Everything you say would be on my list too.

There was a pre-break coming up sting that was beautiful too, it's on TV Ark marked as a 1998 ident but I'm sure it was only used for 'Coming up' continuity.


I always thought the LWT video you pointed to was “the one that got away”.

By that I mean I think it would have made a great opening programme ident. Imagine sitting quietly in your living room anywhere and that suddenly appeared on your screen. It says everything you need to know:

‘We are LWT, this is who we are, this is what we do”.

I've never really warmed to Channel 5's new look. The blocks rising up remind me of London Live and that never a good sign.

The five piece logo is OK, but I don't think it works when it's small.

I still think that the only decent branding package ever to air on that channel was the original 1997 set, complete with the five bar candy stripes.

Oh and the news... Still live in hope that one day somebody will go live with a modern version of their original presentation.


I think the original 5 logo and the 'five' eras were the best for them visually. The later 'FIVE' was pretty good too, but the Desmond-era 5 was bloody hideous in my opinion, looked very cheap.

Nothing beats the original 5news look either in my opinion, incredibly slick and was laid to rest far too quickly.

Saying the name as the last word in a sentence is essentially the previous host saying "cue" - that's how I've always taken it.

Maybe but it helps with cueing if the gallery is particularly busy in a presenter's earpiece. The US style 'thanks for joining us' to their own reporters though can be a bit OTT for me considering their newsroom set the stuff up in the first place. I've also noticed a few sideways looks even on 'Court TV' when reporters are asked about their assessment of evidence to jurors which does not sit well with me.

In my humble opinion...just get on with it for God's sake.

For me, Channel 4 News is probably the best of the current British TV News output. By and large their bulletins are straightforward, intelligent and no-nonsense. And the technical and creative direction provided by Martin Collett is sublime.

I remember watching these years ago on YouTube when I first dabbled into TV pres. Criminally underrated.
