I can't get my head around why broadcasters feel the need to treat viewers like this. I bet if you polled most people they would prefer a 'give it to me straight' approach. Short and snappy is much better and has far greater impact. Sometimes you lose the will to live waiting for the bulletin to actually get going

It's only when you see a bulletin from the past that you realise how long the headline sequences are these days.

This is an excellent example from 1990 which takes 25 seconds from start to finish. That's still the best title sequence they ever had too

I agree, the 1988-1993 titles seen here were superb. I don't understand why they were hated. Fast, quick and powerful opening titles for the Nine O'Clock, weekend and bank holiday news on the BBC.

They were hated because the transmitter at the beginning reminded viewers of a nazi swastika, and the studio background with the newsroom in full view had viewers complaining that the background distracted them

....particularly when Michael Buerk walked behind himself.

1988 - 1993? That was the live background era of BBC News.
You are thinking of the backdrop on screens in the post 'virtual' Lambie Nairn designed era.

I always thought that newsroom background was live.

It's been a while since I read it but I'm sure in Martin Lambie Nairns book he mentions that was part of the inspiration, although the lightning bolts are actually taken from the lion on the BBC Coat of Arms

Unrelated so my apologies but I love the BT piper logo and the Nine O'Clock 88-93 titles when "everyone hated them" (so the tabloids would have us believe).

No. The relauched BBC News in 2000, the newsroom 'action' behind the presenter was on a 15 minute delay - or so the tour guides on the BBC TVC tours would have us believe.

I was talking about the 1988-1993 backdrop.

The stupid thing about BT's rebrand was the vans changed from canary yellow, to sea mist grey, not a great move for road saftey, and noticing them parked in the road attending at repair etc.

I had a yellow BT mug from just before the rebrand, (given out as a souvenir after a telephone exchange tour) clearly getting rid of them in a hurry. Lasted over 30 years, until last year (with it full of hot coffee) the handle snapped off as I took a sip. It's been years since I've removed my jeans in such a hurry!
