Especially when the regional news programmes all share the sometimes quite stark or cold corporate look of BBC News, having those established ‘local’ faces is really important. I’m not suggesting for a moment younger or newer presenters can’t establish that, but it’s important they do for the format to work.
Back in the day, I thought Stuart Flinders was being groomed to eventually being main anchor - the amount of main editions he did standing in for either Martin Henfield or Gordon Burns.

Can we refrain from speculating about how may be taking voluntary (or forced) redundancy. Some of those reading these forums work inside the BBC, and are potentially facing losing their jobs. I can't imagine they'd appreciate people speculating over whether they will or should go.
