Seriously, I was 6 at the time and can distinctly remember the massive menus with news all over the place, and it was probably the thing that really rammed home how big a deal it was.

Some CBBC continuity from the second week of the short-lived September 2001 mini-refresh, notice despite the links now being produced in 16:9, other footage was cropped to 4:3. Also, despite this being a week after the new email was introduced and 4 years after CBBC became the strand's official name, one of the promos refers to the stand as Children's BBC, so this could possibly be the very last time the strand's original name was used:

Though still "Rich and Dom" as opposed to "Dick & Dom".

Pretty certain "Dick & Dom" first got used on air as a joke, way back in 1997 on the final "Buckets And Spades" competition
on summer mornings.

The change from “Children’s” to “CBBC” didn’t really happen in 1997 though. The use of “C” in the ident appears to have been because because “CHILDREN’S” would have been too long, because the presenters, promos, listings and email all still referred to it as Children’s. It was late 1998 when the first two changed, but the email and Radio Times listing staggered on until 2001.

On a similar subject I’m not sure where they got it from, but the Guardian or possibly Observer’s TV guide referred to the Saturday morning CBBC strand as “Planet Saturday” for years after that single summer it was used on air.

Now that you mention it, Michael Underwood's audition as a CBBC presenter had him referring to it as "Children's", despite this being in 1999, though the example I linked above is even stranger, considering the email and Radio Times listing had already been updated by mid 2001.

Talking of Children’s BBC, a clip here featuring the late Michael Sheard in character as Grange Hill’s Mr Bronson. I think he breaks character in the last second though, when Andy Crane surprises him! Anyway, the real reason I’m posting this is that I notice Andy says an early goodbye to viewers in Wales. ISTR it was usually Northern Ireland viewers who had to leave early (for their news programme) - how long did Wales opt out at 5.35, I assume also for local news?

Wales stopped opting out at the end of August/early September that year when Wales Today moved to 6:30.

Northern Ireland carried on until 1996! Andi Peters says on the Broom Cupboard website that he thought saying goodbye to Northern Ireland every night was getting a bit dull, so he stopped doing it for a bit and just left a pause, but so many people complained he had to start doing it again.

Wales Today was at 5.35 from 1984 to 1988 because they shared a studio with S4C Newyddion which was on at seven, so there needed to be a gap between them. Seemingly that problem was solved in 1988, presumably Newyddion was rescheduled, and obviously Neighbours was a massive show at the time so they were presumably keen to show that at the same time as the network.

When the Six began in 1984, Inside Ulster was initially at 6.30 like all the other regions, but I've got the BBC Handbook from 1985 which said ratings plummeted in that slot so they moved it to 5.35 to avoid a clash with UTV, who were totally dominant in that slot. And they kept it there for the next decade, with Neighbours at 6.30 of course, and another Inside Ulster bulletin at 6.55.

Quite interestingly looking at those gallery shots at the start, it looks like those audition clips in Studio 9 were filmed in 16:9, even though CBBC pres was still 4:3 for another 2 years after this was made.
