Regional Operation Centres. They set up 4 of them in the late 70s to replace what people working at each transmitter site would have done and did a lot of the work remotely.

They were the last to keep it running too, as it kept going until around 2004/2005. It was topped and tailed with studio segments by this point rather than just being job listings.

Did they do it all the time or just for the birthday slot? If the latter that may explain why nobody's really picked up on it until now.

I thought it seemed like an odd thing to just produce as a stand alone programme and I was right...... it was originally an item on The Late Show on 15th November 1990.

If they did do it all the time, it must have caused a less than clean start to the programme, as CBBC were not adverse to doing a fancy effect from the ident into the studio, and also the ident music would continue as a bed over the first link as well.

The latter wouldn't have been an issue if they only opted out in vision, and the sound was still from network?

I think you're on to something there - the closing ident is out of sync with the audio - the BBC logo appears a few beats early

Just got round to watching this, a two hour documentary about the one-off 1984 Nether Wallop International Arts Festival, a precursor of sorts to Comic Relief. Starts off slow but trust me you'll want to watch it till the end. More info on the Wikipedia page.

There's a lot more to 4-tel on view here than there was in its post-1993 incarnation, especially in terms of animations, and a competition that wasn't just "Scratch4Cash" which seemed to be the only one running in the 1993-96 era.

It isn't the full closedown though, I assume there was 40 minutes of ETP-1 and tone in there too... if not the actual transmitter being closed down in the middle as well (though would they have done that for such a short closedown?).

Interesting that ETP1 still says IBA at this point too, hadn't the IBA ceased to exist by this point? It had changed to saying NTL later in 1991.

This would have been just over a week before I started primary school as well.

Thanks to the previous 4-Tel post, it showed a preview of Gazza's Soccer School where Paul Gascoigne taught kids how to play football.
