We saw the outside of Emmerdale Farm on today's first episode, so clearly they hadn't entirely wrapped up filming there yet.

Thank You. Will hopefully catch up properly in a few days.

Also noticed there was a scene yesterday where Jack had to push the front door to get it closed. Very subtle bit of foreshadowing, something I wouldn't have picked up on if it hadn't been mentioned a few posts back.

Am I also thinking the recent few months have started the process for fewer appearances of Sheila Mercier as the great Annie Sugden?

There seem to have been more breaks for her and even when around; slightly fewer appearances.

When she finally left in 1994 it was done quietly and even after the plane crash storyline in which Annie was left in a coma; I thought Sheila wanted to remain with the series. It seems as if it wasn’t her decision to leave; I could be wrong though.

I know that Sheila didn’t appear in outdoor scenes for several years before she left (the scenes in the car during the plane crash being an exception). I’m well behind with classic Emmerdale - still watching episodes from 1990 - and I’ve seen Annie make brief appearances in the farmyard but no other location shots. I presume in the episodes I’ve still to see (1990-93) there will be no further outdoor shots of Annie.

Yes, Sheila did leave reasonably quietly. There was very little press coverage compared to say, Nollie Gordon leaving Crossroads - both actressses having played central, legacy soap characters.

It has been a while since Sheila did any outdoor scenes; even in the yard in the classic episodes.

There was one notable scene from 1990 when she was in The Woolpack for Amos’s return after his stroke. She was inside and appeared to join the others outside for a toast to Amos. When we saw the outside scene; Annie had not come outside.

I still think in 1994 she should have been given a proper send off. We saw her go to Spain assuming it was a holiday. Fraser Hines left in the same episode as Joe joined Annie in Spain but we knew he was going. He later said in an interview there were either five others or he was one of five leaving at the same time.

Is the character still alive?

Yes, as far as viewers know.

Yes, she was recently mentioned - as per updated Wikipedia entry...
"In March 2019, Diane tells Victoria that Annie rang and she is in great Health. In May 2019, following Victoria's rape, Victoria and Robert visits Annie to cheer Victoria up."

I think this episode is the first to use the "sad" credits music.

Not seen it yet. Was it at end or start or both ?

The end, the episode ends with Seth telling Alan his wife has died. 2 February 1993 I think.

The second plane crash episode used the same music at the end IIRC, as Alan discovered the plane wreckage.
