Agreed, Nigel. I am a bit gutted about Good Food closing.
It was accidentally turning over to watch a re-run of the wonderful French Odyssey that got me into Rick Stein and into UKTV Food, as it was called then. Class channel with a strong British commissioning focus.

Very bad move. Good food prided itself on UK programming and was a class act working to a select market.
The last thing we need is more crass and cheap American programming where the food is secondary to the format.

IMO the UKTV split should never have happened. It's a bit sad to see a good brand like Good Food becoming absorbed by a more banal "Food Network"
At least I hope the emphasis will be on UK productions, as it's the case for Italian productions on Food Network Italy (US food stuff hardly works here LOL)

I agree specifically with G.O.L.D. UK Gold was a far better channel.

It still is a comedy channel.
It did when it became G.O.L.D., as it became a comedy channel. They've reverted since they rebranded with the current logo though.

Good Food I guess is still a BBC brand and discovery were renting it as part of the deal. So after a certain amount of time I guess the BBC could bring it back. All depends on the details of the deal. It might be worth UKTV considering and Bright Ideas Channel with a mix of home, garden and food programming. Just an idea.

G.O.L.D. was something they were forced into, due to not being able to use the GOLD name at the time, which I believe was due to Gold radio, who they later reached an agreement with.
At the time, they would have either had to keep it as UKTV Gold (which would have been a bit odd if all the other channels had rebranded), or rename it as something completely different, so G.O.L.D. was a compromise.
G.O.L.D. was a terrible attempt at trying to keep a former famous brand (UK Gold) and shoehorn it into a new format. It was supposed to stand for ‘Go On Laugh Daily’ and the announcers actually called it Gee Oh Ell Dee!

I hadn't realised the thing about Gold the radio network, it rebranded the year before UKTV Gold did.
The change to the acronym was also to signify that it was a comedy channel, after all theres no link between the word' gold' and comedy. It was a way of trying to stop people asking why Eastenders wasn't on any more (though I remember when Paramount Channel became Paramount Comedy Channel and people still asked them to show wrestling)
